Ubuntu has this bug reported also where I found a workaround:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/inkscape/+bug/406036

Seems to be a conflict with scim and doing the following gets past it for those that don't need scim:

unset GTK_IM_MODULE ; inkscape
