Description of problem: I have installed mesa-dri-drivers-experimental, rebooted the system and tried to activate the Desktop Effects but I got the "Accelerated 3D graphics is not available" message. I am using Fedora 12 x86_64 with the following components version : ATI Technologies Inc RV620 Audio device [Radeon HD 34xx Series] (3450) mesa-dri-drivers.x86_64 7.6-0.15.fc12 (updates-testing) mesa-dri-drivers-experimental.x86_64 7.6-0.13.fc12 mesa-libGL.x86_64 7.6-0.15.fc12 (updates-testing) mesa-libGLU.x86_64 7.6-0.15.fc12 (updates-testing) xorg-x11-drv-ati.x86_64 6.13.0-0.11.20091119git437113124.fc12 (updates-testing) xorg-x11-server-Xorg.x86_64 1.7.1-7.fc12 I have tried with KMS enabled and disabled. I have not set any /etc/X11/xorg.conf I hope I did not missed something about mesa-dri-drivers-experimental ... Do not hesitate to ask for more information or testing.

Looks like a missmatch btw mesa. Did you try to install mesa by yourself ? Does : yum reinstall mesa-dri-drivers mesa-dri-drivers-experimental mesa-libGL Fix the issue ?

Hello Jerome, I have some news : I have updated mesa-dri-drivers mesa-dri-drivers-experimental mesa-libGL using updates-testing : mesa-dri-drivers.x86_64 7.7-1.fc12 mesa-dri-drivers-experimental.x86_64 7.7-1.fc12 mesa-libGL.x86_64 7.7-1.fc12 mesa-libGLU.x86_64 7.6-0.15.fc12 I am using the following components (mix of updates and updates-testing) : xorg-x11-drv-ati.x86_64 6.13.0-0.11.20091119git437113124.fc12 kernel 2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64 xorg-x11-server-Xorg.x86_64 1.7.1-7.fc12 I should probably be consistent and do a massive update from updates-testing but I do not want to put too much trouble on the family computer yet ... I will come back again as soon as their are new versions of those components in stable updates. However I can still update from updates-testing some particular components such xorg-drv-ati if you wish or mesa-libGLU ... Here are the news : mesa-dri-drivers-experimental work now but : 1- If KMS is enabled it makes Xorg crash. See attached dmesg and Xorg.log, see also bug #540024. 2- If KMS is disabled activating desktop effects using Gnome Shell work but it is extremly slow, nearly unusable. Is it because KMS is disabled ? Do I have to set something in the xorg.conf ? Other cause ? Do you need my Xorg.log and/or dmesg with KMS disabled in such case ? Do not hesitate to ask for more test case, I am happy to help here :-) Cheers, ch
As mentioned in bug #540024 comment 14 and comment 17, having a consistent versioning of mesa-*, libdrm and xorg packages make Xorg no more crash and 3D work great with mesa-dri-drivers-experimental. This bug is not a bug, sorry for inconvenience
