Description of problem: /etc/init.d/functions is sourced by a lot of init scripts. Some of these scripts require /bin/bash, but some are happy with /bin/sh which does not have to be equal to bash. KornShell (ksh) can be used as /bin/sh quite well, but some /etc/init.d/functions constructions does not work outside of BASH. Problematic part is 'local' keyword. This can be replaced with 'typeset' when function is declared as 'function xyz' instead of 'xyz()': xyz() { local abcd=123 } to function xyz { typeset abcd=123 } I've tested this and it works with BASH (/bin/sh=/bin/bash and for scripts requiring BASH explicitly) and also for KornShell (/bin/sh=/bin/ksh) Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): initscripts-9.02.1-1.x86_64 How reproducible: always Steps to Reproduce: 1. ksh 2. . /etc/init.d/functions 3. checkpid $$ Actual results: /bin/ksh: checkpid[61]: local: not found [No such file or directory] Expected results: no error produced
well, 'function xyz' is not completely posix ok, bash and some other shells accept it, but for example dash does not Posix compliant would be removing 'local' completely
This message is a reminder that Fedora 12 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 12. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '12'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 12's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 12 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version, please add a comment here and someone will do it for you. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
This message is a notice that Fedora 14 is now at end of life. Fedora has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 14. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version' of '14' have been closed as WONTFIX. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.
