How did you manage to log the trace for the kernel bug? My message log stops before the trace appears on the screen.

hi, i have the same problem on a client with i686 kernel (2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.i686) gregor
But if I do a restart (not shutdown) it doesn't happened. Is there anybody who don't have this problem ? Please info the hardware you used !
(In reply to comment #7) I can confirm this bug on my PC. I got ASUS P5GDCV motherboard with Pentium IV CPU 3.2GHz. This bug started with kernel version 2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.i686, short time preliminary to noticing this bug first time I changed plymouth theme with updating initrd but I'm not sure it caused the problem. Actually I got version 2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.i686, and the bug persists (although I didn't change the plymouth theme and didn't update initrd). Last kernel without this bug was 2.6.31.9-174.fc12.i686.
I have fc12 on two computers. Only one was affected by this bug in both the previous and the current kernel (2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.i686). So I guess it is related to a hardware conflict. Cannot capture the trace as logging seems to stop just before the bug trace appears on the screen. The behaviour (as described in previous posts) is that the trace appears and the machine halts but does not shutdown or power off. Here is the beginning of the trace as copied manually from the terminal: kernel bug at kernel/time/clockevents,c.262!/invalid opcode:0000[#1]SMP ... lshw: (I noticed something odd here. I'm also experiencing this problem on kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.i686.
2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.i686.PAE is affected too on my system. My smolt profile is available here : http://www.smolts.org/client/show/pub_9ef066bf-3e87-409e-b9ad-1591d5b2af80
Kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.i686 works fine on my PC. This bug seems me to be repaired.
I don't think so. Upgrade to kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12 only fix some bugs related to ext4 file system. And I have been check that this error still happened in my computer.
Still happening to me with kernel-PAE-2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.i686. Went back to kernel-PAE-2.6.31.9-174.fc12.i686 (again).
This is also happening to me on 2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.x86_64 adding 'nolapic' to the kernel boot parameters seems to provide a workaround.
Yes adding 'nolapic' option to the kernel makes it work. But the kernel give me this message at booting : "BIOS bug, no explicit IRQ entries using default mptables (tell your hw vendor)" It explained why this bug not happened on certain hardware. I used Intel D945GCLF2 board with BIOS ver LF9450J.86A.0171.2009.0403.0118. Is it something wrong on the BIOS or the new kernel use different things regarding the BIOS ? What is 'nolapic' doing ?
I have been using 2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12 for a few days now and it appears that for my particular hardware (see above) it has fixed the bug. As I mentioned earlier, this only occurred on one of my machines - the others, using the same kernel, were unaffected.
Still happens with kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12 on a IBM ThinkCentre MT-M 8143-4JU . The top fifteen entries of the stack trace, down to hrtimer_nanosleep, call the same functions as in the original report. From there it differs. I did not check that the hex numbers were the same.
Created attachment 396866 [details] Screenshot of the stack trace Same bug for me with a kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.i686.PAE (happens also with the 2 (3?) previous Fedora kernels). It happens every time the PC is shut down. See the screen shot for the trace (the end seems to be slightly different ?)
Fixed in kernel 2.6.32.9-67.fc12.i686 (at least for my computer, that is)
(In reply to comment #6) > hi, i have the same problem on a client with i686 kernel > (2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.i686) > > gregor sry, but i can't check it because we replaced this workstation against a faster one, now we have x86_64. gregor
Yes it fixed with kernel 2.6.32.9-67.fc12.i686 for my hardware configuration also (Intel D945GCLF2). Does anyone after upgrade the kernel still have the same problem ? I think there is a major upgrade there because the kernel have been change from 2.6.31 ... to 2.6.32 ......
Also fixed in kernel 2.6.32.9-67.fc12.i686 for me.

Works fine with kernel 2.6.32.9-70.fc12.i686, works fine with kernel 2.6.32.10-90.fc12.i686, this bug has never occurred with kernel 2.6.32.* line. It seems be solved.
I am seeing the problem with kernel 2.6.33.2-41.fc13.x86_64 Have not tested the nolapic workaround. Is there a corresponding F13 bug for this?
This message is a reminder that Fedora 12 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 12. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '12'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 12's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 12 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version, please add a comment here and someone will do it for you. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
