This comes somewhere deep inside gtk/gnome libs. sun.awt.X11.XDesktopPeer.gnome_url_show() is the trigger. Which calls gnome_vfs_use_handler_for_scheme(), which tries to get it through gconf and then something goes totally wrong: #1 0x0094fa91 in raise (sig=6) at ../nptl/sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/raise.c:64 resultvar = <value optimized out> resultvar = <value optimized out> pid = 11100148 selftid = 2331 #2 0x0095135a in abort () at abort.c:92 save_stage = 2 act = {__sigaction_handler = {sa_handler = 0x7c920a0, sa_sigaction = 0x7c920a0}, sa_mask = {__val = {1882244152, 130621556, 9489704, 130621540, 121886732, 130621528, 9579068, 0, 1893796216, 5, 0, 1, 1893785656, 122135911, 0, 147736344, 130621476, 122827172, 122827172, 147597880, 130621640, 0, 130621600, 130621528, 130621540, 4, 1893785656, 0, 121920432, 1882244152, 1893796216, 0}}, sa_flags = 5, sa_restorer = 0} sigs = {__val = {32, 0 <repeats 31 times>}} #3 0x074994af in IA__g_assertion_message (domain=<value optimized out>, file=<value optimized out>, line=<value optimized out>, func=<value optimized out>, message=<value optimized out>) at gtestutils.c:1302 lstr = "1028\000\031\316\b\233\025M\a\304\037\222\000\006;S\002\005\000\000\000p!\311\ae\023\221" s = <value optimized out> #4 0x07499a4e in IA__g_assertion_message_expr (domain=<value optimized out>, file=<value optimized out>, line=<value optimized out>, func=<value optimized out>, expr=<value optimized out>) at gtestutils.c:1313 s = <value optimized out> #5 0x0255c1aa in ORBit_POA_activate_object_T (poa=<value optimized out>, pobj=0x6, servant=0x91b, ev=0x7c9224c) at poa.c:1028 __PRETTY_FUNCTION__ = "ORBit_POA_activate_object_T" #6 0x0255d99a in PortableServer_POA_servant_to_reference (poa=0x8ce1298, p_servant=0x20223a4, ev=0x7c9224c) at poa.c:2337 pobj = 0x8ce4650 result = <value optimized out> implicit = <value optimized out> unique = <value optimized out> #7 0x02005198 in gconf_get_config_listener () at gconf.c:2563 ev = {_id = 0x0, _major = 0, _any = {_type = 0x0, _value = 0x0, _release = 0 '\000'}} poa = <value optimized out> poa_mgr = <value optimized out> __PRETTY_FUNCTION__ = "gconf_get_config_listener" #8 0x0200532d in try_to_contact_server ( start_if_not_found=<value optimized out>, err=<value optimized out>) at gconf.c:2260 ev = {_id = 0x0, _major = 0, _any = {_type = 0x0, _value = 0x0, _release = 0 '\000'}} #9 gconf_get_config_server (start_if_not_found=<value optimized out>, err=<value optimized out>) at gconf.c:2296 __PRETTY_FUNCTION__ = "gconf_get_config_server" #10 0x02005f8c in gconf_engine_connect (conf=<value optimized out>, start_if_not_found=<value optimized out>, err=<value optimized out>) at gconf.c:359 cs = 0x2016f1d db = <value optimized out> tries = <value optimized out> ev = {_id = 0x0, _major = 0, _any = {_type = 0x0, _value = 0x0, _release = 0 '\000'}} __PRETTY_FUNCTION__ = "gconf_engine_connect" #11 0x0200694e in gconf_engine_get_default () at gconf.c:595 conf = 0x8cd9678 source_path = <value optimized out> err = 0x0 #12 0x0200df79 in gconf_client_get_default () at gconf-client.c:433 client = <value optimized out> engine = 0x8c8ec98 __PRETTY_FUNCTION__ = "gconf_client_get_default" #13 0x06ae5e18 in _gnome_vfs_use_handler_for_scheme ( scheme=<value optimized out>) at gnome-vfs-private-utils.c:496 client = <value optimized out> ret = 147385496 path = <value optimized out> __PRETTY_FUNCTION__ = "_gnome_vfs_use_handler_for_scheme" #14 0x06aeb3b1 in gnome_vfs_url_show_with_env (url=<value optimized out>, envp=<value optimized out>) at gnome-vfs-utils.c:2158 app = <value optimized out> action = 0x8c900e8 result = <value optimized out> params = {data = 0x6abd364, next = 0x5bff42c, prev = 0x0} type = <value optimized out> scheme = 0x8c8ec98 "http" __PRETTY_FUNCTION__ = "gnome_vfs_url_show_with_env" #15 0x05bf8ab8 in gnome_url_show_with_env (url=<value optimized out>, envp=<value optimized out>, error=<value optimized out>) at gnome-url.c:75 result = <value optimized out> vfs_uri = <value optimized out> __PRETTY_FUNCTION__ = "gnome_url_show_with_env" #16 0x05bf8e1d in gnome_url_show (url=<value optimized out>, error=<value optimized out>) at gnome-url.c:207 No locals. #17 0x002abf47 in Java_sun_awt_X11_XDesktopPeer_gnome_1url_1show ( env=<value optimized out>, obj=<value optimized out>, url_j=<value optimized out>) at ../../../src/solaris/native/sun/xawt/awt_Desktop.c:103 success = <value optimized out> url_c = 0x6 <Address 0x6 out of bounds>
The assert happens in ORBit. I am not sure what OpenJDK can do about this. Upstream GNOME tracks this as: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=597914. It looks like it might even have been fixed.
Reassigning to maintainers of ORBit2

This message is a reminder that Fedora 12 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 12. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '12'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 12's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 12 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version, please add a comment here and someone will do it for you. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
Fedora 12 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2010-12-02. Fedora 12 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
