Description Kevin Fenzi 2010-02-08 03:12:15 UTC
I have a f12 x86_64 guest with a f12 host running on it.

With the qemu and kernel that were in f12 gold release, they ran for about 40 days just fine, but then the guest started taking up 400% cpu (it's allocated 4 cpus) and became unresponsive.

I have tried various kernels and havent been able to find a stable combo yet. ;(

It happened tonight with:

host:
2.6.32.7-37.fc12.x86_64
qemu-kvm-0.11.0-12.fc12.x86_64

guest:
2.6.32.7-37.fc12.x86_64

I attached with gdb and got:

Loaded symbols for /usr/lib64/sasl2/liblogin.so

(gdb) quit

When it's in that state it takes up 400% cpu, doesn't answer to pings and I cannot login on a console or via ssh. ;( The guest runs fine for a random number of days and then goes into this state (this last time it was 4 days).

Happy to gather any info that would help track this down. It's quite anoying.

Comment 1 Kevin Fenzi 2010-02-13 05:29:33 UTC
More info today:

The guest didn't crash, but load spiked way up and it became unresponsive a few times today.
When it went into this state load went up to 40-50 or so, and I couldn't login via the net.
However, I could login on a console and the machine was responsive. I saw a number of processes in D state. The host disk was idle. The guest disk was idle. After about 10min it recovered and went back to normal. ;(

dmesg on the guest:

ok. I looked at munin graphs for the machine and happened to note that in any cases where it became unresponsive it was spiking way way up in irq's.

Running powertop on the guest was showing quite a lot of int's.

I noticed further than another guest on an almost identical host wasn't seeing any issues, and was NOT using the virtio net driver.

I have switched this guest to use e1000 instead of virtio-net now to see if the problem goes away.
Powertop shows a LOT less irq's after switching to e1000.

Could this be a virtio-net issue with SMP and/or large memory guests?

Kevin, maybe save a copy of /proc/interrupts to see if it's virtio-net's interrupt or some other interrupt that is spiking could help diagnose this further?

munin day irq graph

Here's the munin irq graph.
You can see the spikes in local timer and rescheduleing irqs.

powertop output

Here's powertop from the console.
This is after I switched to e1000. It was fine for a bit, but now has jumped up again in irq's.
:(

sysrq-t output from the guest when in the "bad" state.

I got a sysrq-t dump from the guest this afternoon when it's in the weird state. The e1000 driver doesn't seem to have changed anything.

I am going to try the latest 2.6.31.12 kernels on both host and guest now.

Comment 9 Amit Shah 2010-02-15 10:16:11 UTC
Kevin, can you please try qemu-kvm from the virt-preview repository? It has qemu-kvm-0.12, which is the latest stable release.

From the bug, it looks like it's a problem with the iothread not exiting.

Comment 10 Kevin Fenzi 2010-02-15 16:23:14 UTC
Just an update:

I rebooted both the host/guest on: 2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.x86_64
And the problem showed up in just a few minutes.

I then rebooted the guest with just one cpu, and it's been ok since then. ;(
So, perhaps this is an issue with 4 cpu guests?

Anyhow, I will try the latest qemu as suggested later tonight and change it back to 4cpu.

Comment 11 Kevin Fenzi 2010-02-16 23:49:43 UTC
ok. I updated qemu/libvirt from the virt-prevew repo, rebooted and brought the guest up again with 4 cpus.

so far it's been up about 18hours and not a single issue.

Something could show up in a few days, but it's looking promising.

Comment 12 Amit Shah 2010-02-17 03:34:43 UTC
Great; please let us know if you hit the problem again.

Comment 13 Kevin Fenzi 2010-02-23 03:32:27 UTC
Sadly, it just happened again. ;(

Just took about a week or so to happen...

This time I had another virtual on the same host, and it too was spinning and taking up 100% cpu, so it seems when this happens all guests on the host. ;(

Comment 14 Marcelo Tosatti 2010-02-24 17:41:56 UTC
Kevin,

Can you please install and test the qemu packages from

http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=2009702

The backtraces indicate a potential kvm paravirt mmu issue, and these packages
the feature.

The kernel you are using for both host and guest contain bugfixes for all known
paravirt mmu issues.

Thanks.

Comment 15 Kevin Fenzi 2010-02-25 05:48:51 UTC
Well, I grabbed that qemu build tonight and downgraded to it.

Then, I tried just booting a centos5 guest. It fails to boot in virtio_blk.ko
cpu_idle -> default_idle -> mtrr_local -> common_inturrupt -> do_IRQ -> __do_IRQ -> __do_IRQ -> handle_IRQ_event -> acpi_irq -> note_inturrupt -> __report_bad_irq

Then, tried booting a fedora 12 instance from a live iso.
It boots, shows the automatic boot in 10 seconds screen, then hangs.

I can try my main instance, but I am a bit leary about it working.
I shouldn't need to reboot or restart libvirt should I?

I've restarted it after upgrading to qemu-0.12.3-3.fc12.x86_64 from the virt-preview repo.

Let me know what next steps I can do here to help track this down.

Comment 18 Marcelo Tosatti 2010-03-02 19:24:41 UTC
Kevin,

Please run qemu-kvm manually with:

LD_PRELOAD=nopvmmu.so.1 qemu-kvm parameters

This will disable paravirt mmu.

This package has changed ownership in the Fedora Package Database. Reassigning to the new owner of this component.

Comment 20 Kevin Fenzi 2010-03-16 23:08:24 UTC
I've been waiting for this issue to re-occur before restarting the guest, and of course so far it's not. ;(

 17:08:04 up 14 days, 6:36, 5 users, load average: 0.44, 0.69, 0.68

Will update the bug as soon as/if this occurs again. ;(

Comment 21 Kevin Fenzi 2010-03-19 20:57:28 UTC
ok, happened again.

I tried to restart it manually with the LD_PRELOAD, but it didn't seem to work.
It didn't error or anything, just didn't bring up the vm at all. :(

Does the nopvmmu.so.1 need to be used with a specific version of libvirt/qemu?

let me know what you specifically want me to try next time and I will do so.

Comment 22 Bug Zapper 2010-11-03 22:46:16 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 12 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 12. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '12'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 12's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 12 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 23 Bug Zapper 2010-12-03 23:09:41 UTC
Fedora 12 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2010-12-02. Fedora 12 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.

Note You need to log in before you can comment on or make changes to this bug.
