Can we get this backported to 4.x?  We have seen this on customer's 4.6 system.

Do we have any evidence that it's actually this bug and not something else that produces a similar error message?

I find it a bit odd that we're seeing a sudden crop of reports of this when it's been around for so long.

This request was evaluated by Red Hat Product Management for inclusion in a Red
Hat Enterprise Linux maintenance release.  Product Management has requested
further review of this request by Red Hat Engineering, for potential
inclusion in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux Update release for currently deployed
products.  This request is not yet committed for inclusion in an Update
release.
