How to reproduce

Each time:
(export GREP_OPTIONS='--binary-files=without-match --directories=skip --exclude=tags --exclude=TAGS --exclude=ChangeLog* --exclude=*.svn-base --exclude=*~';mkdir dir;touch dir/file;grep -r x dir)
Have not tried to find minial subset of $GREP_OPTIONS.

Checked `path == NULL' in that core dump.

Confirmed, seems fixed in grep-2.6.3, I will push it later today.
