Description of problem: I upgraded to Fedora 13 on my laptop and as nvidia is still not "easily" available I am using nouveau but the laptop after some time is very hot and fans are not running at max speed level compared to cases when the same temperature is attained on Seven or Fedora 12 with nvidia drivers. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 0.0.16-3.20100305git6b8b157.fc13.x86_64 How reproducible: after about one hour of only internet and listen to music Steps to Reproduce: 1. Only use a little the computer Actual results: Difficult to hold the hand where the graphic card is... Expected results: A cooler temperature ! Additional info: This is the xps M1330 from Dell with the GeForce 8400M GS graphic card. Configuration of computer : http://www.smolts.org/client/show/pub_97a51b9b-9c31-4027-b192-acdfa7376036 If you need more informations... I cannot access the temperature from the probe of the graphic card: sensors-detect cannot use it... But the motherboard is at 43°C which is a bit high as in "normal" conditions I am at 31°C. The cpu is scaled to 800MHz as usual. There is nearly no processus in current use except gnomemusicbrowser. I would like at least to be able to change the fan speed to 100% in order to cool things!
Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue. Please attach your X server config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf), X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.*.log) and the output of "dmesg" to the bug report as individual uncompressed text/plain file attachments using the bugzilla file attachment link above called "Add an attachment". We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information. Thank you in advance.
Created attachment 408558 [details] Xorg.log I think I have the same bug : I own a similar laptop (Dell XPS M1530) with a similar graphic card (8600M GT). I join you the last Xorg.log I have before switching to nvidia binary blob, who doesn't have this problem. My xorg.conf was the default one (I think it's no xorg.conf by default). I can't join dmesg, since I use nvidia instead of nouveau. I can add that F12 have *no* problem like this with *nouveau*, so it's a severe regression. My problem seems similar. My computer's fan never calms down : I think it's the medium level of fanning, when F12 with nouveau or F13 and Win7 with nvidia use the lowest level. However my CPU is quite cool (less than 60°C). Like Fabien Archambault, the only way to know the temperature of my GPU is to install nvidia or use Windows. If I restart on Windows, the fan calms down in a minute.
I created my own bug report (#585203), so feel free to remove my comments and attachment of this bug (#583956).

Hello, I added the asked files except the /etc/X11/xorg.conf which is the default one as I do not have the file (except old backup from F12 and nvidia driver).

I am not sure this is solved by the latest update. But since about a week the temperature of my laptop is becoming reasonable (when touching it) after a long time of use (more than 5 hours). The update of today : xorg-x11-drv-nouveau-0.0.16-6.20100423git13c1043.fc13.x86_64 Seems to have even cooldown better the laptop.
I have an 8600GT card with passive cooling. The card is very hot with nouveau. With the binary blob the card was still a little hot, but I could hold my hand on it, with nouveau it burns. I'm also using xorg-x11-drv-nouveau-0.0.16-6.20100423git13c1043.fc13.x86_64 I'm quite worried with the high temperature...
Created attachment 424858 [details] andrei's Xorg.*.log I'm not using an xorg.conf
Still present with this version: xorg-x11-drv-nouveau.x86_64 1:0.0.16-8.20100423git13c1043.fc13 I was using the nvidia driver for some times then I tried again the nouveau driver and the difference in temperature is very important. Where I put my left hand it is very warm in comparison with the time when using the nvidia driver. I am not sure if it was really solved by the time I said it seemed...

Hi, after a long period being with nvidia I have come back to nouveau and I still have the same issue about temperature... I am using F15 alpha and for the moment it seems that the temperature is also very high. I cannot compare with nvidia yet and also it is an alpha version...
I am still using nouveau in F15 and after 30 minutes being on the internet on Firefox 4 the fans are running and the computer is very warm! This message is a notice that Fedora 14 is now at end of life. Fedora has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 14. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version' of '14' have been closed as WONTFIX. (Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.) Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were unable to fix it before Fedora 14 reached end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on "Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that version of Fedora. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
I reopen it as it is still available for F17 and I am not alone... PS: I hope the status assigned is fine.

I have updated to F19 and I still have the fans being at 100% after a short time and an increasing temperature which is difficult to support.
This message is a notice that Fedora 19 is now at end of life. Fedora has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 19. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '19'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version. Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not able to fix it before Fedora 19 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.
