Description Naresh 2010-04-22 14:35:06 UTC
Description of problem:

I am using KDE and the brightness of my display panel is too high. I am unable to reduce it using any of the kde utilities. Also the fn-f5/fn-f6 doesn't seem to work

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
2.6.33.2-57.fc13.x86_64

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install F13 on Vaio VPCCW
2. Try adjusting brightness with Fn-F5/Fn-F6
3.

Actual results:
Brightness isn't getting changed

Expected results:
Brightness should be changed with fn-keys

Comment 5 Naresh 2010-05-02 03:16:53 UTC
just came across this, http://www.linux.it/~malattia/wiki/index.php/Sony_drivers

Are our kernels built with these CONFIG_SONY* flags ?

Comment 6 Naresh 2010-05-17 11:26:34 UTC
[envy@localhost ~]$ grep SONY /boot/config-$(uname -r)
CONFIG_HID_SONY=y
CONFIG_SONY_LAPTOP=m
CONFIG_SONYPI_COMPAT=y

looks for newer chipset, its a problem :(

Comment 7 Matthew Garrett 2010-06-07 16:16:47 UTC
Does it work if you use the nouveau driver rather than the nvidia one?

Comment 8 Naresh 2010-06-08 13:02:06 UTC
nouveau doesn't detect the display at all!

Comment 9 Matthew Garrett 2010-06-08 13:23:44 UTC
Ok. From the looks of your system, backlight control should be provided via the graphics driver. Nouveau will do so, so if nouveau's not working then that's a separate bug that we'll have to fix. Unfortunately there's no way for us to add backlight control to nvidia's driver, so I'm going to close this out and maybe they'll get around to fixing their bug eventually.

thank you.

To adjust brightness on Nvidia graphics card (in particular on Sony VPCCW) with Nvidia proprietary driver, try installing nvidiabl (worked for me):
