There should also be a SEE ALSO for xdg-mime(1) which can be used to accomplish the change. Attached is a suggested replacement for the existing man page. If it had been in place already, it would have saved me about 30 minutes of work.
xdg-open is a part of xdg-utils.
I'm not sure 100% about the suggested changes. I mean, these are all implementation details provided by your currently running desktop, and trying to list and document them all in the xdg-utils manpages feels... a little out of scope. I'll have to think on it.
All man pages should list files involved and related commands. It is just a matter of good man-page form; it is not a matter of debate. This goes back to the earliest days of Unix. There is no man page for xdg-utils, and it is not appropriate to have to go out to the internet and do a Google search to obtain information which should have been there in the first place. It is possible the SEE ALSO should include more than xdg-mime. I'm still not sure exactly what is there to manage default applications. But when the default default application is far from the one you want, you need to know what to do in order to cure the problem. The only argument I can see against including this information is that it will take up too much disk space. But we are far beyond the days when disk space was a problem. And these extra few lines hardly add to the amount of space that is necessary. When I execute "apropos default" or apropos "default application", xdg does not show up. I am not even sure now how I discovered xdg-open, but as I recall, it was purely by accident. This is not the way it should be.
OK, I see your point, well made. I've pushed this change upstream, and it will be included in the next pkg update we issue.
