Description Tony White 2010-07-21 15:42:22 UTC
Description of problem:
The search box in the upper left hand side of the on line documentation should be clearly marked as a google search input field using google's provided logo. Otherwise I think you break the EULA for sitesearch provided by Google.
Google have a reputation to protect and advertise their products with branding.
If you want to use Google sitesearch in Fedora's on line documentation, I'm pretty sure that it must be clearly marked as a Google search.

As a side note, I haven't checked, I'm going from memory. I actually use Google's ajaxsearch myself and that definitely requires that a Google logo be present next to the input field. As I remember, sitesearch is the same.

using google here is a violation of fedora infrastructure policies and it needs to be removed and switched to something else.

Can you please reference the policy and provide alternatives?

Comment 4 Craig Thomas 2010-07-21 19:18:24 UTC
Is this also true of ?

Now that you mention it, yes it probably is. I don't think anyone's noticed that before. I'll bring it to FAB and see what they think since that search link was put in place before we had this policy in place.

It looks like we have a need for fedoraproject.org to run its own search engine for our site-specific content.

I'm in the process of disabling the Google search on docs.fedoraproject.org, but when a free alternative becomes available, it will be easy to hook the search box up to it.

Many thanks Tony for spotting the problem and to Mike for your guidance here.

I've since learned that this project is already underway -- https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-infrastructure/ticket/1055
