Description Bill Adams 2010-07-23 15:54:01 UTC
My desktop system will have random xorg hangs. The mouse pointer still moves and the music from rhythmbox plays, but the keyboard stops working. The screen saver never activates either after the freeze.

I can ssh to the computer. If I kill -9 Xorg, it restarts but the same frozen screen appears. If I telinit 3 and back to 5, same result of the same frozen screen showing up.

The freezes seem random. They have been happening for some times. It could be a couple of weeks between a freeze or five minutes. Ambient temperature seems to have little effect. The workload also seems to haven no effect.

I have upgraded the BIOS to the latest version. This computer (a gateway GM5478) is, sadly, known for having issues (http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7586_102-0.html?threadID=269432&start=45).

So before I start replacing components to try to "fix" this issue, I wanted to see if there was any interest in trying to work around whatever issue this system has. I can use strace and compile rpms with patches if needed. I just need direction. If it is not worth the effort for a corner case, I'm happy to have this request closed and I'll go the replace-everything-until-it-is-fixed route.

Thanks.

The computer is actually a GT5628 (http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/1014737R/1014737Rsp3.shtml). I've already replaced the video card (originally an 8500GT now a GT216).

Sadly this is a know issue on certain chipsets that we don't know the cause or solution for at this point. The only workaround is to boot with "nouveau.noaccel=1" in your boot options.
