I just installed the current Beta ALSA drivers (0.9.0beta12) and they seem to work fine for both recording and playback on this chipset. So this is not a hardware issue on the machine.
I have the exact same sound and drivers setup in my Athlon notebook. Running Skipjack 2.4.18-0.8 kernel /usr/bin/record doesn't crash or reboot. Please let me know if you need any more specifics about my hardware, otherwise I think this is fixed by newer kernels.
Thanks for the bug report. However, Red Hat no longer maintains this version of the product. Please upgrade to the latest version and open a new bug if the problem persists. The Fedora Legacy project (http://fedoralegacy.org/) maintains some older releases, and if you believe this bug is interesting to them, please report the problem in the bug tracker at: http://bugzilla.fedora.us/
