Description John Gotts 2010-08-17 00:49:02 UTC
Description of problem:
Beginning with Fedora 12 and continuing on with Fedora 13, cups does not initialize the USB serial printer correctly (if at all). It might also be true that no serial printers are initialized correctly, but I don't have a serial port to test with.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
All shipped versions with Fedora 12 and 13. Fedora 11 never exhibited this problem.

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Configure a printer with the device URI serial:/dev/ttyUSB0 and make and model Local Raw Printer.
2. Print out a receipt.
3.

Actual results:
The output is a stream of several lines of seemingly random characters, whereas the output was correct with Fedora 11. Tweaking the baud rate, bits, parity, and flow control sometimes result in less random characters, but the output is still full of junk and other control characters.

Expected results:
The same receipt we got with Fedora 11.

Additional info:
I have discovered that if I create the following /etc/minirc.dfl file:

pu port /dev/ttyUSB0
pu baudrate 9600
pu minit
pu mreset
pu rtscts Yes

and start minicom and then exit with Ctrl-A Q Yes, the next receipt starts with a few junk characters, but the rest is correct and then all subsequent receipts print correctly. My conclusion from my testing is that some kind of initialization was removed from cups or something changed about the USB serial driver as to require additional initialization that cups is not doing (that minicom does do).

The hardware we're using is a "pl2303: Prolific PL2303 USB to serial adaptor driver" and the serial printers we're using are Epson M129B and M129C receipt printers (they cost around $300 and they're used with most point of sale systems).

Patch from Till Kamppeter:

Comment 2 Jiri Popelka 2011-02-01 15:49:17 UTC
I applied Till's patch.
The Ubuntu bug has several duplicates so I think this could be common problem on Fedora too.

Please try cups-1.4.6-8.fc15 (rawhide).

Comment 3 Bug Zapper 2011-06-01 11:23:44 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 13 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 13. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '13'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 13's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 13 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
