Description of problem: I'm going through the initial screens of anaconda, select basic storage, and reach a window with two columns and arrows between them for moving the disks I want to use during the install process to the 2nd column. I pick the two internal hard drives and move them to the 2nd column. I leave the external USB drive in the first column. I think proceed to say I want to do a custom configuration, and I reach the window listing all the partitions on all the disks where I can select them, Edit, Create, Delete, etc. I find the external USB drive partitions included in this list. While I find the initial disk selection window pointless because it is so hard to distinguish disks, as long as I have to use it, I'd think it would obey my selections, so why is the disk I left out of the list included in the partitioning screen? Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Whatever is on the fedora 14 alpha x86_64 DVD iso. How reproducible: Only installed once so far. Steps to Reproduce: 1.see above 2. 3. Actual results: The disk I left out of the install process gets pulled back in. Expected results: If I leave it out, I shouldn't see it again during the install. Additional info:
A couple thoughts here: (1) Are you sure the sequence of events was basic storage, clearpart UI (that's what that's called, by the way), partition type selection? The intended ordering is basic storage, partition type selection, clearpart UI. (2) With the next rebuild of anaconda for F14 and rawhide, the clearpart UI will be skipped if you do custom partitioning. I believe that should take care of this bug. (3) I think you misunderstand the purpose of the screen in question. You're not selecting which drives you want to be part of the installation. You're selecting which drives should be cleared (partition table wiped, etc), and which should be left alone but still available for mounting. This is useful if you've got data drives you want mounted but otherwise untouched vs. drives to be used for installing the system. The text at the top should make that at least somewhat clear. If you want to have anaconda completely ignore certain disks for all of installation, you have to select "Specialized" way at the beginning. It used to be that you'd get the filter UI regardless of which you selected there, but that was deemed to be confusing for regular users. Oh well.
Created attachment 441341 [details] screen 4 Just to disambiguate everything I took screenshots of the VNC client as I went through the install again. Here's the 1st relevant screen where I selected basic storage devices.
Created attachment 441342 [details] screen 5 In the next screen (5) I tell it I am doing a fresh install.
Created attachment 441343 [details] screen 9 I then go through hostname, timezone, and password screens and wind up at screen 9 where I select custom layout.
Created attachment 441344 [details] screen 10 The next screen is the "two column" screen 10. Here I classify the usb drive as data only and the seagate and western digital drives as installable (since I have no idea which is which).
Created attachment 441345 [details] screen 11 Then I get to screen 11 with all the disks and partitions, and here I am saying I want to format a partition on the usb drive (which the previous screen classified as a mount only drive). It sure looks as if it is going to be willing to let me do that (but I didn't actually try it since I don't want to format that drive :-). Personally I could do without screen 10, especially for a custom partitioning. I'd just as soon go directly to screen 11.
And, in f15 beta, I no longer see screen 10, so this report is probably moot.
This should be fixed up as part of newui.
