Description Andy Lutomirski 2010-09-02 17:40:05 UTC
My F13 system was completely stable on F13 with intel_iommu=off, but recently (new kernel, maybe), X hangs every couple days. It usually happens which browsing the web.

When this happens, the mouse still moves, but the keyboard doesn't work. ssh into the machine is fine. dmesg says:

[drm] nouveau 0000:04:00.0: PFIFO_DMA_PUSHER - Ch 2

X takes 100% CPU, and strace says:

ioctl(8, 0x40086482, 0x7fff1ca83cb0) = ? ERESTARTSYS (To be restarted)
--- SIGALRM (Alarm clock) @ 0 (0) ---
rt_sigreturn(0xe) = -1 EINTR (Interrupted system call)

and repeats apparently forever. Moving the mouse makes X do this:

select(44, [11 12 13 14 42 43], NULL, NULL, {0, 0}) = 1 (in [42], left {0, 0})

Sending SIGTERM to X has no effect. Sending SIGQUIT made the mouse freeze and them the screen go blank after a few seconds. X restarted and the new process takes 100% CPU in the same loop as the old one had.

Something in the process of killing and restarting X logged this:

[drm] nouveau 0000:04:00.0: nouveau_channel_free: freeing fifo 2
[drm] nouveau 0000:04:00.0: Failed to idle channel 2.
[drm] nouveau 0000:04:00.0: PFIFO_DMA_PUSHER - Ch 127
[drm] nouveau 0000:04:00.0: nouveau_channel_free: freeing fifo 3
[drm] nouveau 0000:04:00.0: Allocating FIFO number 2
[drm] nouveau 0000:04:00.0: nouveau_channel_alloc: initialised FIFO 2
[drm] nouveau 0000:04:00.0: Allocating FIFO number 3
[drm] nouveau 0000:04:00.0: nouveau_channel_alloc: initialised FIFO 3

init 3 and killall -9 X gets X to go away, but I still have no console.

Rebooting with 'reboot' works fine.

This is on kernel 2.6.33.8-149.fc13.x86_64. Nouveau startup says:

*sigh* I messed up my grub.conf and was running the wrong kernel. This is probably a duplicate of buf 596330. I'll reopen if I'm wrong.
