Description John Mallett 2010-09-04 11:15:11 UTC
Description of problem:
When you download a Encrypted message kmail does not decrypt the message.

Probable cause
kmail searches for gpg and can not find it
ln /usr/bin/gpg2 /usr/bin/gpg fixes the problem

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
kmail Version 1.13.5
This version has been installed from the Fedora 13 KDE Desktop Edition (Installable Live CD). So it may only be affecting that system. Giving kmail the ability to detech gpg2 as well as gpg would probably fix the problem

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:

Reaffecting to kdepim since it provides /usr/bin/kmail

Comment 2 François Cami 2010-09-07 09:55:09 UTC
John,

I see that the current gnupg2 package provides /usr/bin/gpg2

Could you check that installing this package fixes your problem? You might have to remove your symlink first.

Comment 3 Rex Dieter 2010-09-07 13:50:12 UTC
kmail already has an implicit dependency on /usr/bin/gpg2

kdepim -> gpgme -> gnupg2

The problem described here (in the initial comment) is that kmail is looking for /usr/bin/gpg specifically, which is now only provided by gnupg-1.4.10

Comment 4 John Mallett 2010-09-09 12:42:32 UTC
the problem also affects kgpg.

Comment 5 Rex Dieter 2011-05-10 19:04:24 UTC
Kgpg was fixed in bug #647876

Ugh, forgot about this one, will which is more feasible:
1. patch kdepim to use gpg2
2. add dep for gnupg(1)
3. patch kdepim to use gpg2 *or* gpg(1)

Comment 6 Bug Zapper 2011-05-31 14:29:15 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 13 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 13. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '13'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 13's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 13 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:

Comment 7 Steve Grubb 2011-06-04 11:51:46 UTC
Please remove the dependency on gpg. We deprecated it a long time ago during the crypto consolidation project. (I guess someone brought it back to life recently.) The distribution already installs gpg2, so it wastes disk space to install yet another program that does the same thing. But more importantly, gpg carries its own crypto implementation. It is not FIPS compliant. Gpg2 on the otherhand uses libgcrypt, it is FIPS compliant. Its better to try to use gpg2 and fall back to gpg if the first is not found. Thanks.

Comment 8 Rex Dieter 2011-06-10 14:51:59 UTC
kdepim-4.4.x unfortunately hard-codes use of gpg(1) in many places, and (apparently) uses some options not used or supported in gpg2. fixing this to use gpg2 properly was non-trivial, so I (re) added the dep in the meantime,

Comment 9 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-07 20:18:06 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Is this still true?

Comment 11 Rex Dieter 2016-01-19 17:01:52 UTC
Yes and no, it *should* use gpgme (gnupg2-based) stuff in most places now

Comment 12 Christian Stadelmann 2016-01-19 17:22:10 UTC
I wrote here since kmail is still depending on package gpg, not on gpg2. I don't think this is still the intended behaviour, and kmail should require and use gpg2. Should I open a separate bug for that?

Comment 13 Rex Dieter 2016-01-19 17:32:25 UTC
ok (fwiw, kmail already implicitly depends on gpg2 through kleopatra)
