RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Comment 7 Milan Crha 2011-01-17 13:26:23 UTC
Thanks for a bug report. I'm not able to reproduce this crash myself, but I see a warning on the Evolution's console:
> libebook-WARNING **: EBookView: Exception while releasing BookView
when I open a new message composer, type "aaa" into the To field, wait few seconds, and press a Tab to move to other widget in the composer (warning is shown after the Tab press).

I realized that this does the Google addressbook, unreffing an addressbook on the evolution-data-server side incorrectly. I guess it's related to your issue.

I have more questions, though:
a) when you go to Edit->Preferences->Contacts, what addressbook types do you have checked there for autocompletion, please? I have there one On This Computer, one LDAP (which requires vpn) and one Google addressbook (which does not require vpn).

b) which of those from a) require vpn connection, please?

c) When I uncheck Google addressbook then the critical warning on the Evolution console on Tab press in the searched To widget is not shown. When you uncheck the google addressbook in preferences (I see there is one active in the time of the crash in the backtrace), will it also crash?

d) is it possible that the vpnc connection drop is somehow unrelated? (it can help to reproduce this, but maybe if you do the same steps as I described at the beginning of this comment, then with c) it'll not check, but without it it will?)

e) and the last, could you also try to run evolution-data-server from a console with G_SLICE=always-malloc exported, so it'll do slightly different things with respect of G_SLICE, whether it'll either help or will show us other caveat, please? You can do that like this:
 - close evolution
 - on console invoke: evolution --force-shutdown
 - then invoke: G_SLICE=always-malloc /usr/libexec/evolution-data-server-2.28
 - if everything is ok it should show "Server is up and running..." there
 - run on another console evolution

I know this is quite long, but I believe (and hope) we are close to the root of the issue. Thanks in advance for a help with this.

proposed eds patch

for evolution-data-server;

Patch for the google addressbook backend. The first chunk is for the incorrect unref, the second is for an uninitialized memory usage, which was valgrind claiming to me too.

Comment 10 Milan Crha 2011-01-17 18:32:59 UTC
I built a package which has the patch for this included. Please try with evolution-data-server-2.28.3-13.el6. Thanks in advance.
