Description G. Michael Carter 2010-10-01 13:57:43 UTC
I recently had problems with locking, so I tried ext3 to see if it was related to ext4. But noticed the image created almost 50-75% faster on an ext3 filesystem. I've noticed that the LiveDVD is really slow compared to Ubuntu for a while now. So I'm trying to build a ext3 liveDVD to see if the disk actually runs faster.

Another though, why can't the liveDVD/CD be built right on top of the squashfs? Why do we need the second file system inside?

I believe that ext3 and ext4 have different integrity defaults and that is a possible cause of what you are seeing. Someone would need to do some more detailed analysis to know for sure. That probably isn't going to happen soon.

As for why squashfs can't be used directly, until very recently it didn't support extended attributes (in particular selinux needs this). With kernel 2.6.35 and squashfs-tools 4.1, extended attributes are now supported and we could work toward not having an embedded file system. I'd like to work on this, but most likely won't have time soon. The install to hard drive is tied up with the embedded file system and I haven't looked at that yet to see how it is tied up.

This message is a reminder that Fedora 13 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 13. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '13'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 13's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 13 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
