Description of problem: As of Fedora 14, anaconda no longer supports the 'telnet' boot option to perform a remote, text-based installation. "10.2.3. Enabling Remote Access with Telnet" While support for 'ssh' has been added, ssh installer support is only available as a way to remotely login and monitor/debug the installer. My understanding is there is no replacement for the former 'telnet' installation method, and this section needs to be removed.
This is correct for now, though we have been discussing what we might be able to do in #anaconda. It's best to just remove the text in question and if we ever come up with a new plan, we can insert new text.
I'll have this fixed and rebuilt in the next few hours.
This was discussed at the 2010-10-08 blocker review meeting. We agreed it does not constitute a blocker as the blocker process does not cover documentation issues. (It's not fixed yet, despite the above comment).
Rudi fixed this in the f14 branch: commit 72cf6c3e42caf79d73a7ab9cf00eff089eaf27f7 Author: Ruediger Landmann <r.landmann> Date: Fri Oct 8 14:58:48 2010 +1000 rm telnet references BZ#640309 It likely hasn't been republished to the docs site.
There are in fact still more that I didn't catch; back onto it :(
All telnet references have been removed from the F16 version of the guide. I've changed the opening para to section 11.2.3, Enabling Remote Access with ssh, to the following in order to incorporate James's original comment: "To enable remote access to a text mode installation to monitor and debug the installer, use the sshd=1 option at the boot: prompt:" Draft version is at http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora_Draft_Documentation/0.1/html-single/Installation_Guide/index.html Given the time that's elapsed since this bug was last worked on and the uncertain fate of a telnet replacement at that time, let me know if there should now be further updates to the guide as a result.
Removing myself for these bug components as I'm either no longer involved in that aspect of the project, or no longer care to watch this particular bug. Sorry if you are caught in a maelstrom of bug changes as a result!
