Description of problem: There seems to be some default timeout (30 seconds?) in systemd that prevents certain services from ever starting (for example, kdump.service, which needs to create a kdump initramfs image from time to time, if the kernel is upgraded). This means that certain facilities are not available after upgrading to systemd. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): systemd-10-6.fc15.x86_64 How reproducible: 100% Steps to Reproduce: 1. sudo systemctl start kdump.service 2. Times out and never gets to finish making its initramfs image 3. Actual results: Services such as kdump cannot be used Expected results: Services such as kdump can be used Additional info: I suggest that we revert to existing behavior of allowing things to take as long as they need by default. Or having a very obvious config knob to change this. If there must be a timeout, make it 5 minutes or something large.
The timeout for kdump.service has been increased recently in bug 635393. What other services likes that are there?
Correction: The default timeout was increased to 3 minutes not only for kdump, but for all SysV initscripts. http://cgit.freedesktop.org/systemd/commit/?id=f34277d9117cd9d858f7332eef0023e05277ce74
