Description Jonathan Kamens 2010-10-15 15:06:05 UTC
I'm running F14, current from fedora, updates and updates-testing repositories.

Some time in the last few days, I think, I stopped being able to click on "mailto:" links in Web pages viewed in firefox. I have these links configured to open in Thunderbird. I've checked my preferences and the configuration is correct ("Thunderbird (default)"). When I click on the link, nothing happens. There is nothing in the error console.

When I change the firefox configuration to explicitly call /usr/bin/thunderbird for mailto links, it works. So something has apparently broken in the internal configuration.

I did recently uninstall a number of KDE RPMs. I wonder if this uninstallation might have messed something up:

Oct 14 22:09:50 Erased: kdebase-workspace
Oct 14 22:09:43 Erased: kdebase-workspace-libs
Oct 14 22:09:40 Erased: kdeartwork
Oct 14 22:09:38 Erased: kde-settings-kdm
Oct 14 22:09:36 Erased: kdm
Oct 14 22:09:35 Erased: fedorawaves-kdm-theme
Oct 14 22:09:28 Erased: kbluetooth
Oct 14 22:07:53 Erased: kdemultimedia

Aside from this, nothing jumps out in my yum.log as a recent update that might explain this issue. Neither firefox nor thunderbird has been updated since before the problem started happening.

Thank you for submitting this bug report; sorry for how long it has taken for a response. Is this original report still an issue, or has it been obe (overcome by events)?

Still broken.

Comment 3 Matěj Cepl 2011-07-20 15:48:44 UTC
Reassigning for investigation to KDE folks ... I believe in the end Firefox should call xdg-email, right?

Comment 4 Rex Dieter 2011-07-20 15:58:16 UTC
xdg-email is one way to do that in a relatively DE-agnostic way, yes.

Comment 5 Kevin Kofler 2011-07-21 11:59:15 UTC
I don't think this is an issue in KDE packages.

Comment 6 Matěj Cepl 2011-07-21 22:04:31 UTC
OK, thanks for the analysis. Reporter can we get mimeType.rdf file from your profile (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder), please?

Thank you

I'm on F15 now.

I've got firefox-5.0-2.fc15.x86_64 and thunderbird-5.0-1.fc15.x86_64.

I ran firefox -ProfileManager and created a brand new profile and launched firefox with it. When I clicked on a mailto: link in that brand new profile, it popped up a dialog offering Yahoo! Mail and Gmail, but not Thunderbird, as options.

Shouldn't it offer Thunderbird, since I have that installed, or at least "GNOME default email client" or something like that?

Works for me. What is your default mail application for mails? (System-settings -> details -> default applications).

Comment 9 Jan Horak 2012-05-03 14:01:00 UTC
See Preferences/Applications and search for 'mailto' Content type. It should be set to Use Thunderbird (default). If not it has been somehow changed to different handler for mailto: uri.

I am no longer having this problem in F17.
