Description Mack Stanley 2010-11-09 04:44:06 UTC
Description of problem:
Booting kernel 2.6.34.7-56.fc13.i686.PAE with an ext2 root filesystem, if the filesystem was not cleanly umounted, on a prompt for the root password, every keystroke is treated as <enter>, returning an "incorrect password" message.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
initscripts-9.12.1-1.fc13.i686
The root filesystem is encrypted: cryptsetup 1.1.3

How reproducible:
Every time.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Fedora 13 with the root file system ext2 and encrypted.
2.Shut down without unmounting the root file system.
3.Boot with "rhgb" removed from the kernel options, for good measure.

Actual results:
After providing the file system password, the initialization process continues normally, then starts fsck and, encountering problems, drops (normally) to a shell and prompts for a root password. Each keystroke (even control-d) then is treated as <enter>, with the response "Incorrect password".

Expected results:
Enter the root password, then run fsck to repair the filesystem.

Additional info:
Two probably unrelated observations:

(1) When I enter the passphrase for the root file system, as soon as the *'s reach the right hand edge of the screen, the prompt for the passphrase is repeated at each keystroke. Nevertheless, the passphrase is accepted normally. I tried changing the passphrase to something very short (so that typing it doesn't reach the right hand edge of the screen), but this doesn't help with the problem that I am reporting.

(2) /usr is on a separate (encrypted ext2) filesystem. I don't think that this is relevant, because the problem I am describing occurs before there is any attempt to mount this second file system. Also I have tried copying /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, and /usr/libexec to the first file system. This makes no difference in the problem I am reporting.

Thanks for your time!

Still present in Fedora 14.
