Created attachment 460048 [details]
Log of the crash after closing the canvas (see "additional info")

Description of problem:
Some menu windows of the editor won't show up. This is for instance the case of the "color" window.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
root.i686 5.26.00e-1.fc14, all related packages installed.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create an histogram and draw it ("TH1F h; h.Draw();").
2. Enable the editor ("View > Editor").
3. Click on (for instance) the y axis.
4. Click on the editor Axis color chooser.

Actual results:
Most of the time, the click does not seem to have any effect, although if you click at the wanted color position it will select it : the color chooser window has not showed up but was still in effect.

Expected results:
The color chooser window should show up and allow to select the wanted color without blind bet.

Additional info:
Also, not sure this is directly related but closing the canvas by clicking on the upright cross just after these operations will lead to a crash, see attachment log.

root-5.26.00e-3.fc14 has been pushed to the Fedora 14 testing repository. If problems still persist, please make note of it in this bug report.
If you want to test the update, you can install it with
su -c 'yum --enablerepo=updates-testing update root'. You can provide feedback for this update here: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/root-5.26.00e-3.fc14

Comment 5 Skippy 2010-11-16 10:53:04 UTC
Unfortunately, the update does not seem to influence this issue.

Did you update the root-gui package to the new version? The autogenerated instructions above only mentions the root main package.

su -c 'yum --enablerepo=updates-testing update root-gui'

Comment 7 Skippy 2010-11-16 12:35:43 UTC
Indeed I had not. Now I have updated these packages, and even all root-related packages, but still it does not seem to help.

Comment 8 Skippy 2010-11-16 12:39:10 UTC
I forgot to mention bug 652663 which mentions a similar behaviour for some Gnome menus.

Comment 9 Mattias Ellert 2010-11-16 13:52:13 UTC
With the previous version, I could reproduce the crash you reported following the steps you provided. I even got the same backtrace as the one you attached.

With the updated version the steps you provided no longer reproduces the bug for me. If you still see a problem, I need more information about how to reproduce it.

Comment 10 Skippy 2010-11-16 14:05:00 UTC
The very same way. However I have yet to reboot my computer because of other updates, maybe this will help (I'll try probably this evening).

Comment 11 Skippy 2010-11-21 17:32:49 UTC
I have tried again after rebooting. Indeed the crash does not occur anymore, which is a very good point. However the color menu windows, which was the main purpose of this report, still does not show up. Does it when you follow the steps of the first post ?

When I follow the steps you provided, it does not reproduce the symptom with the invisible colour chooser you describe. The colour chooser shows up every time for me.

What I was able to reproduce was the crash and the backtrace you reported, for which I could create a patch. This patch has now also been accepted by the upstream developers.

Since I can not reproduce the issue you reported I can not debug it. in comment #8 you say you see similar problems in other applications. Could it be that these problems are related and that the bug is not in root itself?
