RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Please, attach a screenshot of your "Composition & Addressing" page from the configuration of the account in question. Also, make sure you sent our the email as HTML (not as plain text).

Also, what's the current setting of View/Message Body As?

Could you also attach example email message which present the issue?

Thank you in advance

Comment 3 wang jinghui 2010-11-30 09:39:19 UTC
Package:thunderbird-3.1.6-1

When we new a message in the thunderbird,we can select the message format by
click Options->Format->Auto-Detect(Deault),Plain Text Only,Rich Text(HTML)
Only,Plain and Rich (HTML) Text. The default setting for my thunderbird is
Auto-Detect,if I select Plain and Rich (HTML) Text,re-step 2-3 in the bug
description,I got an email with the correct alignment.

Anyway If I create a message with some Center alignment text and Right
alignment text and set the Options->Format to Auto-Detect,the thunderbird
should detect the correct format for the user rather then losing the text
format setted by the user.

From account settings, not general Preferences, but that's OK. From the attached email examples it is obvious what's going on here.

Problem lies in Options/Format/Auto setting, which is very confusing and in my opinion poorly design setting. The heuristics by which Thunderbird decides whether the message should be sent as HTML or as plain text is just poor.

See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=584363 and especially http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/can_i_completely_turn_off_the_buggy_auto_detect_on_composition for longer discussion of these problems.

Unfortunately, I don't think this is the issue we should fix here, it should be resolved somehow upstream.

Closing as UPSTREAM. If you want me to file a bug upstream, suggest what should be the bug about, I will do it, but honestly I am not sure.
