I'd like to see a lightweight emacs-filesystem package split out of emacs. The motivation for this is that packages could at least drop in various init or site-start files without a) requiring any emacs (or -common which isn't lightweight) to be installed, b) owning various emacs dirs, c) using triggers to install the files, or d) splitting annoyingly small *-*emacs subpackages from them. For this purpose, the package should own/include at least these (empty) dirs: %{_datadir}/emacs %{_datadir}/emacs/site-lisp %{_datadir}/emacs/site-lisp/site-start.d Ccing xemacs maintainer, same RFE applies to it.
Done in Rawhide: emacs-23.2-17.fc15 Emacs Packaging Guidelines should be modified to mention the possibility of using the -filesystem package. Nevertheless, it should be noted that it's only for small add-ons which do not slow down Emacs startup and do not modify default Emacs behaviour, because users cannot uninstall the Emacs-related part of the package without removing the package core. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Emacs
