Description Mehmet Avcioglu 2011-02-06 18:57:13 UTC
Description of problem: When using the Install to Hard Disk method of LiveCD, the installation wipes contents of the hard disk even though partitioning was not modified and format was not selected.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Fedora 14 Live CD Desktop x86_64

How reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot using Live CD x86_64.
2. If already have a partition mount that, if not create a partition manually, format and mount.
3. Make changes inside the partition and unmount.
4. Click on Install to Hard Disk, select manually partition, select the partition from previous step as the root partition, don't select format.
5. Continue installation and remount the partition to observe everything wiped.

Actual results: Hard disk contents removed, overwritten.

Expected results: Hard disk contents not touched.

Additional info: The screens for Install to Hard Disk on Live CD look exactly same as the screens for normal install, but the partitioning and installation behavior is fatally different.

happened in fedora 15 beta live cd too!
And yes I lost some (not really important) data.

It's a VERY dangerous bug imho, a crash of the installer is way more tolerable.

In my opinion this *is* a blocker.

Comment 2 Adam Williamson 2011-05-12 15:40:18 UTC
so, I suspect the installer can't really do anything else, because it's just transferring a disk image. But it probably should warn you about what will happen in this situation...

reporter wanted to propose this as a blocker. I'm probably -1 as it's not a regression and doesn't exactly hit any criteria, but I could see NTH...we're very very late in cycle, though.

so, this is effectively a dupe of 629311, because the fix for that is simply that post-f15, you won't be able to re-use an existing / partition, live or non-live; installer team considers it fundamentally broken and un-supportable. so you won't be able to get in the situation in this bug.

it would have been nice to have this fix in f15, but it's probably too late to change it now.

so after further investigation this is in fact different to that, un-duping. anaconda team thinks it may be a good idea to take this into f15 rc2. other votes? I'll go -1 blocker +1 nth, we should probably take a fix for this.

Comment 5 Adam Williamson 2011-05-12 16:22:57 UTC
oops, ping-ponging back again. it IS a 629311 dupe effectively - there was a sorta separate bug but it becomes a no-op once 629311 is fixed.

629311 was fixed between Beta and Final, so it should be impossible to hit this bug in F15 Final, it won't allow you to mark the / partition to be re-used.

confirmed, with a live image I have locally from 2011-05-09, with anaconda 15.31, it will not allow you to use an existing partition as root, without formatting it: you get an error dialog 'You must create a new filesystem on the root device.'
