Description Michael J Gruber 2011-03-09 10:32:14 UTC
Created attachment 483152 [details]

Description of problem:
Gnome 3 shell as well as KDE plasma with desktop effects crash due to an X server crash.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.9.99.1-6.20101201.fc15

How reproducible:
KDE 90% when switching on desktop effects
Gnome 3 shell unclear (50%?)

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Fedora 15 x86_64 (via netinst)
2. Log into KDE and turn on desktop effects (or log into Gnome)
3.

Actual results:
KDE plasma crashes sometimes immediately, sometimes after using an effect like present windows, due to an X server crash.
Gnome shell crashes some time (moments) after using it.

Expected results:
Be as stable as F14 with mesa-dri-drivers-experimental.

Additional info:
Kernel: 2.6.38-0.rc6.git6.1.fc15.x86_64

In Fedora 14 with mesa-dri-drivers-experimental, this card works perfectly with desktop effects in KDE plasma (4.6.0) with nouveau/Gallium.

The graphics card is standard for a Lenovo T61 and others.

Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue.

Unfortunately bare coredump isn't that helpful as you apparently hope it is. Wansn't abrt able to generate a backtrace (with a bug)?

Could you please add drm.debug=0x04 to the kernel command line, restart computer, and attach

* your X server config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf, if available),
* X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.*.log)
* output of the dmesg command, and
* system log (/var/log/messages)

to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the bugzilla file attachment link above.

We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information.

Thanks in advance.

Can you update to http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=232757 (kernel-2.6.38-0.rc8.git0.2.fc15) and retry?

With updates from 3 days ago or so, kde would not let me enable desktop effects with opengl at all any more (not even checks disabled). No effects, no crash (not with gnome, either) which is better, though a regression from F14 in terms of functionality unless one discards mesa-dri-drivers-experimental.

I'll retry with the above asap.

Comment 5 Michael J Gruber 2011-03-15 11:07:51 UTC
Yeah, everything works nicely with these versions:

kernel-2.6.38-0.rc6.git6.1.fc15.x86_64
kernel-2.6.38-0.rc8.git0.1.fc15.x86_64
mesa-dri-drivers-7.10-0.29.fc15.x86_64
kdebase-workspace-4.6.1-3.fc15.x86_64
gnome-shell-2.91.91-1.fc15.x86_64

Specifically, I can activate and use desktop effects (cover, flip, cube, ...) in KDE plasma (OpenGL with standard settings) without any glitch or crash. I can't get Gnome shell to crash with the effects it uses (and can't activate any others, of course - it's Gnome...).

Thanks!

So I suggest closing with CURRENTRELEASE or ERRATA, whatever is more appropriate after branching.
