I can confirm this issue. I see a problem with utf8 encoded directory names. When I open these directories, Blender crashes.

I discovered that there is a bigger problem with my (czech) language. Some symbols like "č,ž,ě" are showed as two symbols (false conversion utf8 -> ISO). Because, I have not a 32-bit system, if may be nice you can try out blender-2.49b-13.fc14 on your system.
No change for me with blender-2.49b-13.fc14.i686. Still I reproduce SIGABRT: 1. Create directory "Obrázky" 2. Start blender 3. Open directory "Obrázky" (File -> Open)

blender-2.49b-13.fc14 has been pushed to the Fedora 14 stable repository. If problems still persist, please make note of it in this bug report.
