Description raz 2011-03-30 08:29:56 UTC
Description of problem:

booting 2.6.38 in redhat 5.3 is not possible due to old ramfs format.
when creating ramfs with mkinitrd, the initramfs image fails to mount / .

console looks like this:
...
mount: could not find filesystem /dev/root ...
setuproot: error mounting /proc
setuproot: error mounting /sys
switching to new root and running init.
umount old /dev/
umount old /proc
umount old /sys

switchroot:mount failed : No such file or directory ..
panic...

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1.build 2.6.38 on redhat 5.3
2. install it
3. mkinitrd ...
4. fix grub to boot 2.6.38
5. reboot

Actual results:
panic

Expected results:
boot

Additional info:

to bypass this problem I was forced to hack initramfs with initrmafs from fc14 and replace the kernel modules.

I have a user in redhat : redhat but i failed to login to this bugzilla with it.

Comment 2 Prarit Bhargava 2011-03-30 14:31:36 UTC
We do not support the booting of upstream kernels in RHEL5 (or any RHEL for that matter).
