Description of problem: The Gnome3 desktop takes too long to appear upon initial login after boot. From correct password to desktop ready (top banner with text and icons) takes 40 seconds on a 3GHz CPU with 4GB RAM and 120MB/s [max.] SATA harddrive. Watching the LED disk activity light, it is OFF except for brief flashes at 5, 14, and 22 seconds; then ON from 32 to 40 seconds after password. In contrast, bringing up an XFCE desktop takes only 25 seconds on a wimpy machine: 1.6GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 45MB/s [max.] PATA harddrive. The LED disk activity light is ON most of that time. Both machines have 1Gbit/s ethernet, VGA, keyboard, mouse, AC power, and nothing else (no radios, no batteries, ...). Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): gnome-desktop3-2.91.93-1.fc15.x86_64 How reproducible: every time Steps to Reproduce: 1. initial login after boot 2. 3. Actual results: too long from correct password to usable desktop (40 seconds on moderately fast machine.) Expected results: at most 10 seconds from correct password to usable desktop. Additional info:
I do not use gnome, and more detailed info is needed, try: * BEFORE loggin in normally, from another machine: * log in via ssh (root) to the machine several times, once per command: # tail -f /var/log/messages # tail -f /home/user/.xsession-errors # tail -f /var/log/Xorg.0.log monitor hd activity while loggin in: # iostat -xk 2 * now log in normally and check the logs in real-time for anything strange.
