Description of problem: After a while my usb devices hang and the ups service no longer can pull new data, apps outputting sound to my headset hang and sometimes desktop workspace switching will take on the order of 30 seconds. Sound works (except for some rare crashes caused by something different) if I use the motherboard sound instead of the USB headset. I first noticed the problem in 2.6.36, but I skipped 2.6.35 because of a video driver regression that I didn't get a work around for until after I had gone from F13 to F15. The hangs don't trigger reliably. Often it will happen after playing a sound through the headset, but not always. I am currently using 2.6.38.2-10.fc15.i686.PAE. And to avoid suspends (which some USB 1 devices have been reported to have problems with) I am booting with the usbcore.autosuspend=-1 kernel parameter and am running the following in rc.local: echo on > /sys/bus/usb/devices/1-2/power/control echo on > /sys/bus/usb/devices/1-4/power/control echo on > /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/power/control lsusb -v hangs once I am in this state. I have been running for several days now with the ups service running, but with the usb headset disabled in pulseaudio and haven't seen a hang. With the 2.6.36 kernel just trying to run the ups service was a problem, now that might not be the case. It might just be the combination of my usb hub and the headset currently causing problems.
It pretty much had narrowed it down to a problem connected to the USB headset. Using the motherboard sound instead of the headset resulting in me no seeing the problem. However, it looks like whatever the problem was, it isn't happening in 2.6.39. Normally what I was seeing was being triggered pretty consistently playing sound through the usb headset and then not playing sound for a bit.
You could also try the 2.6.38.8 update for F15.
The affected machine has been moved to rawhide. The problem is pretty much better with 2.6.39 (3.0 kernels have different problems). I did manage to get things in the broken state when try to work around some short lived problem (that involved booting using /sbin/upstart), but I normally don't see it. I am still using the usbcore.autosuspend=-1 boot parameter though, which might be hiding the problem.
We'll close this out since the machine has moved on to rawhide.
I haven't seen any USB issues for a while now, so I think this is completely fixed in recent kernels. I should have closed it myself.
