Description of problem: When removable devices are used they have some automatic interactions when they are inserted. However it's not clear how to find the devices some time later to unmount or safely remove them. Under F14/Gnome2 the device would be easily accessible from the desktop but now it seems we have to navigate to the /media directory to eject or safely remove these devices. Additionally, when the device was opened it wasn't possible to safely remove it, a message to that effect was given. In F14 the remove would close the windows using the device. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): gnome-shell-3.0.0.2-2.fc15.i686 How reproducible: design change has brought about this issue - 100% reproducible Steps to Reproduce: 1.insert USB storage eg. photo card and use it 2.desire to eject / unmount / safely remove 3.struggle to do so Actual results: Have to hit logo key, search for 'Files' to get file manager; navigate to /media directory. Right click on the mounted thing to ask to unmount / eject / safely remove. Safely remove says it isn't possible to safely remove. Expected results: An easier way of safely removing a device. Additional info: F14 / Gnome2 had an easy way to do this because the devices were on the desktop. Additionally the 'safely remove' operation took precedence over processes that had the files open and closed them.
Will probably be fixed in gnome 3.2 (fedora 16). gnome designers didn't decide what's the best design yet. I heard that they are going for an indicator in the left side of the top bar. a gnome-shell extension to provide similar functionality can be developed and packaged for fedora as a workaround.
An extension was made to workaround the lack of removable drive management in gnome-shell, you should try it (again, it's not a solution, it's an unofficial workaround): yum install gnome-shell-extensions-drive-menu
