Description Wendell Baker 2011-05-09 17:44:52 UTC
Description of problem:

The initial user selector cannot handle more than a few usernames. There is no scrollbar on the right to allow a large quantity of usernames to be selected.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

$ rpm -q -f /usr/sbin/gdm-binary
gdm-3.0.0-2.fc15.i686

How reproducible:

100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Fedora 15 prerelease (circa 2011-05-01)
2. Acquire runlevel 5 (as it used to be known)
3. see the gdm login manager present the choice of users

Actual results:

Actuality (a photo) is included separately

Expected results:

A scroll bar should appear and allow for controlled choice among the options.

Additional info:

One can use the arrow keys to move the focus down down down down. My name (Wendell) appears second-to-last. So, the workaround is to guess the position of the focus.

The accounts were created with a batch process (a shell script) that created the relevant family member accounts with useradd, usermod and so forth. That process has been functional more or less since FC4 (it's shouldn't be part of the problem here).

Actuality of the login screen with no scrollbar.
The use of the mouse won't get you to my name (wbaker) down in the 'w' range but if one uses the keyboard arrow keys, then one can get down there.

If you go too far you get to 'Other' which is workable.
My name happens to be second-to-last.

I fixed this upstream here:

http://git.gnome.org/browse/gdm/commit/?id=16f7633d280a3ed8ea4b0c99262907edb82a34eb

Will still need to do an f15 update.

When might this get pushed to the fedora repository? This problem persists with gdm-3.0.4-1.fc15.x86_64. Nothing in the updates-testing repository either.

Comment 12 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-07 20:04:17 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
