Description Tim Cuthbertson 2011-06-18 06:51:22 UTC
Description of problem:
Monitor does not standby / turn off, but instead keeps entering and leaving standby.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Unsure. fc15 with all updates applied (and it has happened ever since I first intalled the fc15 beta)

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. xset dpms force off

Actual results:
The monitor goes dark (but not off). A few seconds later, the monitor shows me an "entering power save mode" message and then actually turns off the backlight. A second or so after that, the monitor backlight is turned on again, with a DVI cable symbol in the top left corner as if a cable had just been plugged in (my computer is connected to my monitor with DVI, and nothing else is plugged into the monitor). Seconds later, it shows the message about entering power save mode. This repeats indefinitely.

This also happens using the normal power saving settings, and leaving my computer alone for 5 minutes.

Expected results:
Monitor should turn off / enter standby until I wake it

Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue.

Please add drm.debug=0x04 to the kernel command line, restart computer, and attach

* your X server config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf, if available),
* X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.*.log)
* output of the dmesg command, and
* system log (/var/log/messages)

to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the bugzilla file attachment link above.

We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information.

Thanks in advance.

xorg.0.log

The other Xorg.*.log files didn't show drm.debug=0x04 in the kernel flags, so I presume they are from different boots and therefor not relevant. Let me know if you need them.

Comment 5 Tim Cuthbertson 2011-06-22 10:48:43 UTC
I don't have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf. But i've attached the other files, after booting with the kernel flag and running `xset dpms force off` in case that adds any useful messages when the screen turns itself on and off. Hopefully the logs make some sense to you :)

Currently using fedora16 beta here and am also affected by this issue. I have the same monitor as the OP but am using HDMI connector.

Comment 7 Jérôme Glisse 2011-10-25 14:20:56 UTC
Patch at might fix that

Sorry for the slow feedback. I have moved to ubuntu, and am now running kernel version 3.0.0-14-generic.

According to git, this patch has been applied to my current kernel, and I still see the issue. So I do not think that was the problem (or at least, not the whole problem).

Comment 10 Alan McGinlay 2012-01-02 10:36:23 UTC
Still happens in fedora 16 with all updates applied, kernel 3.1.6-1.fc16.i686.PAE

Comment 11 Vlado Plaga 2012-02-26 21:36:47 UTC
I had the same problem (in Ubuntu and in Debian), but now in Debian unstable the problem disappeared. See my post under the Ubuntu bug report for more details (versions):

Comment 12 Alan McGinlay 2012-03-03 15:39:26 UTC
It seems to be fixed in the latest stable Fedora release now! I can finally leave the house without worrying if my monitor is sitting there destroying it's self :)
