Simple sample file on which XeLaTeX bails.

Description of problem:
On a fresh, updated Fedora 15 install, XeLaTeX fails complaining about files more than 5 years old, and that it "can't find the format file `xelatex.fmt'!".

Comment 1 Tiago Cogumbreiro 2011-09-18 22:54:22 UTC
As a workaround, install TeX Live 2011 from <http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/TeXLive> Then reinstall package texlive-xetex. Worked for me.

Comment 2 Mark Stock 2011-11-02 16:00:28 UTC
I upgraded to texlive 2011, which removed the "more than 5 years old" error, but even with Tiago's "yum reinstall texlive-xetex" I still get the error:

$ xelatex xtemp

Comment 3 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-07 16:35:18 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 4 Petr Pisar 2013-02-08 14:36:12 UTC
I have the same problem with texlive-xetex-svn26330.0.9997.5-16.fc18.noarch in F18. It worked in F17. It does not work in F18.

Comment 5 Petr Pisar 2013-02-08 15:09:03 UTC
Stracing "fmtutils-sys --all" shows some interesting lines, like /bin/kpsewhich finds libkpathsea.so.6 in /builddir/build/BUILD/...

Configuration is read:

# fmtutil-sys --catcfg
xelatex xetex language.dat -etex xelatex.ini
xetex xetex language.def -etex xetex.ini

But kpsewich cannot find xelatex.ini:

# "kpsewhich" "-progname=xelatex" "-format=tex" "xelatex.ini"
# echo $?
1

After installing texlive-latex:

xelatex --output-driver="xdvipdfmx -V 5" oh2013-gulag.tex
This is XeTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.5-0.9999 (TeX Live 2013/dev)
 restricted \write18 enabled.
xelatex: fatal: Could not undump 1114113 8-byte item(s) from /usr/share/texlive/texmf-var/web2c/xetex/xelatex.fmt.

/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/latexconfig/xelatex.ini is provided by texlive-latexconfig.

Now fmtutil-sys --all does a lot of things, but prints warning:

Comment 7 Petr Pisar 2013-02-08 15:22:01 UTC
The computer modern fonts are provided by texlive-cm. After installing it fmutils-sys --all passes.

However using xelatex fails on missing encoding styles now:

(/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/base/fixltx2e.sty)
*************************************************
* LaTeX warning: "xparse/redefine-command"

*************************************************
) (/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/fontspec/fontspec-xetex.sty
(/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/base/fontenc.sty

! Package fontenc Error: Encoding file `eu1enc.def' not found.
(fontenc) You might have misspelt the name of the encoding.

Comment 8 Petr Pisar 2013-02-08 15:29:32 UTC
The encoding definitions are provided by texlive-euenc.

Then /usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/latexconfig/graphics.cfg cannot find xetex.def. xetex.def is provided texlive-xetex-def.

After installing these two packages, I'm able to translate my XeLaTeX document despite it complains on some missing files:

** WARNING ** Could not open config file "dvipdfmx.cfg".
** WARNING ** Failed to load AGL file "pdfglyphlist.txt"...
** WARNING ** Failed to load AGL file "glyphlist.txt"...

Comment 9 Petr Pisar 2013-02-08 15:35:15 UTC
Glyph lists are provided by texlive-glyphlist.

Comment 10 James 2013-05-22 19:41:35 UTC
Everything seems happy now in F19. Everyone OK for me to close this off?

Comment 12 Stefano Costa 2013-08-09 14:57:49 UTC
Unfortunately I am still seeing this error in F19.

Installing texlive-euenc and texlive-xetex-def fixes the problem, but they should perhaps be added as dependencies?

Comment 13 Sam Kingston 2013-09-18 04:23:31 UTC
Agree with comment #12: texlive-euenc and texlive-xetex-def should probably be dependencies on texlive-xetex, as installing these (missing) packages fixes the missing .def files.

Comment 14 Marcela Mašláňová 2014-04-24 07:22:50 UTC
I have same problem in F20.

/usr/bin/mktexfmt: line 395: /usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/texconfig/tcfmgr: No such file or directory
fmtutil: config file `fmtutil.cnf' not found.
I can't find the format file `xelatex.fmt'!

Comment 15 Andreas Schneider 2015-01-30 10:26:39 UTC
Marcela, I have the same issue on F21. What package is needed to fix this?

Comment 16 Andreas Schneider 2015-01-30 10:34:56 UTC
'dnf install texlive-texconfig' fixes the issue from comment #14 for me.

Comment 17 Robert Kuska 2015-05-19 09:22:36 UTC
I've run into comment #8 today on f22. Would be nice to edit requires for texlive-xetex as suggested in comment #13.

Comment 18 Roman C 2015-07-12 14:50:11 UTC
I confirm that the problem exists in F22 and the solution suggested in comment #13 works.

Comment 19 Grégoire 2016-01-18 10:19:14 UTC
The issue from comment #14 is still present in fedora 23. And the solution from comment #15 works partially: it fixes the immediate problem (missing /usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/texconfig/tcfmgr) but then xelatex complains about not finding cmr10 (http://paste.fedoraproject.org/311922/12090145)

I tried installing texlive-euenc and texlive-xetex-def, but the problem persists.

Comment 20 Grégoire 2016-01-18 10:20:59 UTC
Ok, I found the missing package: I also had to install texlive-cm.

Comment 21 Fedora End Of Life 2016-07-19 20:24:40 UTC
Fedora 22 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2016-07-19. Fedora 22 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.

Comment 22 Fedora End Of Life 2017-07-25 18:28:57 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 24 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 2 (two) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 24. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '24'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 24 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.
