Redhat 6.1 will not install on a Tyan Tomcat III S1563S, Intel HX based (on the supported list). Memory and CPU varitions appear to make no difference. The most recent test is on an 200MMX with 64Megs of RAM. Symptoms (also reported by others in newsgroups) Distribution install copies a few files and crashes With updated install disks "linux update" starts lilo but exhibits a kernel panic after checking APIC. It appears to be attempting to activate multiprocessor logic on a single processor config. Comments: Corel Linux does the same - however it's rescue boot yields a bit more info about MP-APIC failure. Slackware appears stable on this board - I have not used it, this info is from others I'm assuming the floppy kernel is trying SMP logic and not correctly sizing the system as a single processor config.
Seems like I have a similar Issue. TyanTomcat 1, Cyrix 6x86 166+. The install went well, but whenI go to reboot after, I get an "invalid operand :0000" when"calibrating APIC timer" on bootup after Lilo runs. I recieved this while trying to upgrade mymachine over from a slackware install (which wored fine)
