Description Mephisto 2011-10-04 23:02:20 UTC
Description of problem:
I've seen the notorious "white window bug" with nvidia only on my ubuntu laptop, but since the fedora update to compiz 0.9.5, I have it on my desktop as well, but in a different way.
The old way was easy to reproduce: Just open enough application windows and soon enough one will only show a white area, even though the application works and can be interacted with. Closing windows makes it possible to open new windows again
The new way is a lot more annoying. The desktop seemingly works fine, until some point in time where it gets confused and produces a window with white decorations. After that, any window will have white decorations, and soon after, applications and menus will show white as well. Closing apps doesn't have much effect, except that temporarily I can open a new window properly. The only way to fix this (from what I found so far) is logging out and back in.

To me this all seems like some serious memory issues. It's like applications don't free their video memory properly, so the memory runs out and never restores. Relogging resets the X server, and therefore probably the video driver, so the desktop works again.

I never had this issue on pre-0.9.5. I was running compiz with emerald (cause gtk-window-decorator had a serious memory leak, making my X server use up tons of ram in no time), and using compiz with gtk-window-decorator now cause I don't seem to have a choice for anything else anymore (:S).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
compiz-0.9.5.0-3.fc15.i686

How reproducible:
Not sure. I tried opening terminals after a fresh restart to reproduce the problem and I gave up around 50 of them... But when 1 app shows anything in white, the problem stays until logout.

Additional info:
This might be the same bug, but launchpad hates me these days, so I can't post there right now:

Nvidia driver is on 280.13.

Comment 1 Mephisto 2011-11-13 15:43:19 UTC
Despite the lack of comments/activity, I wanted to add that this is still present on Fedora 16. The new xorg didn't help, and neither did upgrading to 290.06 nvidia drivers.

I've also had another problem in F16 that might be related. When I close a window, often it will stay visible until the application below refreshes (clicking the desktop usually works best). Sometimes they don't disappear at all and I have to relog to clean my desktop.

If I had to guess, it looks like some kind of memory management issue to me. The white windows probably come because the video memory has run out, and since F16 the uncleared memory might stay on the desktop (as "dead" windows), even though I didn't see this behavior in F15.

I'm sorry if my explanation is a bit vague, but if you need more help, let me know. Can someone at least look at this issue? Using F15 was kind of annoying, but F16 I don't even consider usable right now...

And no, I don't want to switch to nouveau, I still want to be able to play games...

Comment 2 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-07 16:48:45 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
