Description of problem: For a long time, Thunderbird has had the problem that occasionally frozen when I am typing an e-mail message. This problem has gotten dramatically worse. Now typically, I can type less than one complete sentence before Thunderbird freezes. After a minute or two, Thunderbird then resumes normally. The problem has gotten bad enough, that I have now had to resort to writing my e-mails in gedit and then cut & pasting into Thunderbird. I used to think this was somehow the inline spelling check causing the freezing, but I disabled that edit feature and I still see the freezes. I see a separate bug about IMAP freezing Thunderbird. But I have my mail check frequency set to 10 minutes, so I cannot reasonably explain such frequent freezes as being caused by IMAP. The freezes not only occur while typing the body of the e-mail but also when adding recipients, and setting the subject. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 6.0.2 How reproducible: Steps to Reproduce: 1. Press reply to any e-mail message 2. Start typing a response 3. Actual results: Freezes regularly. With the amount of text in this bug report, I would expect at minimum least 5-10 freezes each lasting sometime between 5 seconds to 2 minutes. (Generally if it freezes more than 2 minutes, I kill thunderbird and start over.) Expected results: Just to be able to compose my e-mail message. Additional info:
Note: Sometimes thunderbird also freezes when not composing, but that might not be the same problem, as it seems to happen less frequently and could be the IMAP freeze bug.
Two work arounds: 1. Go to offline mode, and only compose e-mail in offline mode. Note: Other things freeze as well such as the drop down menu to select offline mode, so this is not a great workaround. 2. Run: yum downgrade thunderbird This resolves all the freezing issue, proving this problem is a regression of thunderbird.
I take it back. yum downgrade thunderbird only solves about 95% of the freeze problems. If I let a thunderbird window sit for awhile, there is a good chance that when I go back to it the window will be frozen. The timing of the downgraded version's freezes seems to be the 10 minute IMAP recheck schedule. So what I suspect is happening in the newer version of thunderbird is it is nolonger honouring the recheck schedule, and instead constantly rechecking for IMAP e-mail. Like the older version of thunderbird it tends to freeze during this check, but since the check happens continuously in the newer version, thunderbird freezes way to often even to compose e-mail. This suspicion is really based more on observation activity reported on the status line, rather than any concrete measurements or examination of the source code. Bill
Thunderbird starting freezing again, and discovered the cause is fedora automatically upgraded me to version 7.0-1. I downgraded back 3.1.0 again, to stop the freezing.
I added: exclude=thunderbird* to the [main] section of /etc/yum.conf So if there is a new version of thunderbird that might solve this problem I will have to install it manually to test.
This weekend, for some reason thunderbird was automatically removed... Of course since I had it in the exclude file yum could not re-install it. I finally ended up downloading the thunderbird 3.1.10-1 rpm and installing it manually with: rpm -Uvh thunderbird-3.1.10-1.fc15.x86_64.rpm Then to make sure it could not be removed again by the package kit updater: chattr +i $(rpm -ql thunderbird)
Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue. I haven't heard about this issue from anybody else so far, so, we need more information to be able to reproduce the issue here. 1) Are you able to reproduce this when running thunderbird in the safe mode (i.e., run it with parameter -safe-mode on the command line) 2) Are you able to reproduce the problem with the upstream binary from https://www.mozilla.org/thunderbird/ (or http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/ if you need x86_64 version)? 3) Are you able to reproduce the problem with a fresh profile? Also, when the freeze happens could you run (as root) strace -f -o /tmp/thunderbird-strace.txt -p$(pidof thunderbird-bin) let it run couple of seconds and then attach /tmp/thunderbird-strace.txt to this bug as an uncompressed attachment, please? Also, when you are done with strace and thunderbird is still frozen, could you attach gdb gdb thunderbird $(pidof thunderbird-bin) and then run in gdb command line thread apply all backtrace and paste the result (it could be multiple screens of text) here as a comment? Thank you for your cooperation and helping to make Fedora more awesome! We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information. Thanks in advance.
Created attachment 527969 [details] strace captured during a short freeze (not in safe mode)
It looks like I can no longer produce a problem. Obviously the imap in the newer versions of thunderbird were behaving badly with Zimbra. But after the imap server update I am no longer seeing a problem. This leads me to conclude the problem had to be server side, not client side. It still seems strange to me that imap puts a lock on the UI for composing e-mail, but with it now back to only occurring once every 10 minutes, it is a minor problem at most.
Comment on attachment 527969 [details] strace captured during a short freeze (not in safe mode) Opps. Wrong version of thunderbird. No wonder why the freezes were only 10 minutes.
Created attachment 528206 [details] strace of 7.0.1 during a freeze Since an IMAP server update, the freezes are now only occurring every 10 minutes and not lasting as long. In other words, the 7.0.1 version is now behaving the same as the 3.1.0 version in regards to freezes.
I don't see that issue with zimbra and TB10. Do you have any reproduction steps or broken scenario? If so, please reopen.
