I tried again with hplip:

Steps:
Deleted printer
Disconnected USB cable
Installed hplip
Connected USB cable
Printer installed

When I tried to print from gedit and a test page via system-config-printer, no error... but no print either. I know for sure I got an error with hplip the first time.

You need the proprietary plug-in installed. The PPD has a proper message to tell you that, but GNOME doesn't show you that message (bug #744025).
