Why the difference ? Perhaps there is an error in one of the update packages ?

Same problem here. "There are 57 updates available" but "Install updates" fails due to "Transaction error: could not add package update for sane-backends-libs-1.0.22-5.fc14(i686)updates: sane-backends-libs-1.0.22-5.fc14.i686".

Note that "sane-backends-libs" is hidden in the collapsed "sane-backends" and unchecking the "sane-backends" checkbox doesn't help - you need to expand the hidden items first. I think this may block all updates for the less experienced users.

I have never used any scanner software on this machine.

Comment 2 Martin Simmons 2011-11-01 12:02:56 UTC
I got similar problems: the Software Update desktop tool failed to update sane-backends-libs. Also yum update failed like this:

---> Package sane-backends.x86_64 0:1.0.22-5.fc14 set to be updated
--> Processing Dependency: sane-backends-libs(x86-64) = 1.0.22-3.fc14 for package: sane-backends-libs-gphoto2-1.0.22-3.fc14.x86_64
---> Package sane-backends-libs.x86_64 0:1.0.22-5.fc14 set to be updated
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Package: sane-backends-libs-gphoto2-1.0.22-3.fc14.x86_64 (@updates)
           Requires: sane-backends-libs(x86-64) = 1.0.22-3.fc14
           Removing: sane-backends-libs-1.0.22-3.fc14.x86_64 (@updates)
               sane-backends-libs(x86-64) = 1.0.22-3.fc14
           Updated By: sane-backends-libs-1.0.22-5.fc14.x86_64 (updates)
               sane-backends-libs(x86-64) = 1.0.22-5.fc14
           Available: sane-backends-libs-1.0.21-3.fc14.x86_64 (fedora)
               sane-backends-libs(x86-64) = 1.0.21-3.fc14

Running yum update --obsoletes fixed it. The problem was that sane-backends-libs-gphoto2 has been obsoleted by the new package sane-backends-drivers-cameras, but it looks like Software Update didn't deal with this.

This bug afflicts Fedora 15 too. Packagekit could not upgrade the system but a yum update could:

Richard: What do you think this is a packagekit error?

Comment 5 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-16 13:24:04 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 14 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 14. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '14' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 14 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
