Reinstall metacity, or check why the GConf daemon is crashing. The bug fix will be in the next stable version of the control-center package.

commit 1ce466f80bf83e733339362f2cd9bde68943bf2d
Author: Bastien Nocera <hadess>
Date: Fri Nov 11 13:17:26 2011 +0000

universal-access: Avoid crashing when GConf is broken

Or when metacity is badly installed. gconf_value_get_string()
    _can_ return NULL.
