This fixed the issue but I assume it should have worked out of the box. Should this line have been included or is this a workaround? Doesn't fix my issue. Don't know if its becuase I have an Nivida Card and its trying to route / take input from the DVI port?
I'm seeing the same thing with my new Thinkpad W520. Both Mic and Internal Mic input devices show up but I can't figure out how to actually use the Internal Mic.
The MIC seems to start recording if I have headphones in... but even with the boost and everything set to max I get no input.
I am experiencing the same problem as Vincent with Fedora 16 64-bit on my Lenovo T500. Steve's suggestion does not resolve the issue in my case.
I should mention that an external microphone plugged into the analog microphone jack on my T500 works just fine. The problem I am experiencing only occurs with the built-in microphone. I have the same issues on F16, x86_64, with disabled optimus, using discrete gfx. My mics don't even show up Also: when I plug in a speakerset into the headphones output then I get no sound and can't get it to work. the workaround of comment 2 also doesn't work for me

excellent! makes both my mic and headphones/line-out work!!!
This works on my W520 and the wife's Z61t.
Confirm - the module options appear to enable to the built-in mic.
Alternative fix (without making any changes in /etc): 1) run hda-analyzer wget -O run.py http://www.alsa-project.org/hda-analyzer.py python run.py 2) Go to Node[0x14] AUD_IN 3) Unmute and raise the value of Val[4] and Val[5]
Adding options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=thinkpad at the beginning of "/etc/modprobe.d/dist-alsa.conf" works on W520.
I'll add another "fixed mine too" (Fedora 16, Lenovo W520). The microphone and laptop/docking station audio-out all work great, now.

I needed to increase Val[0] and Val[1]. Thank you!
Had no success with above suggested solutions. Playing around with the hda-analyzer made me able to record sounds, but very faintly. Running alsamixer allowed me to find the internal microphone volume and most importantly the internal microphone boost value. Setting those to intermediate values (instead of 0) made my built-in microphone work fine with skype as well as indicating sound input in the meter in pulse-audio volume control. The workaround helped me too (ThinkPad X201).
I just preupgraded to F17, and the internal mic works by default, but the headset mic doesn't. To make the headset mic work, I need to open gnome-control-center and switch to "Docking Station Microphone" even though I don't have a docking station.
This message is a reminder that Fedora 16 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 16. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '16'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 16's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 16 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on "Clone This Bug" and open it against that version of Fedora. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
Fedora 16 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-02-12. Fedora 16 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
