Description John Griffiths 2011-11-12 19:00:15 UTC
Description of problem:
I tried several times to use k3b to write a DVD iso to DVD-R media. Each time it failed. I tried at reduced burn rates; still failed.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
k3b.i686 1:2.0.2-5.fc15

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open k3b
2. Use Tools -> Burn Image
3. Select ISO if not already selected.
4. Burn image.

Actual results:
k3b reports an IO error.

Expected results:
k3b should burn the image to disk properly

Additional info:
Brasero burns the ISO to DVD-R media correctly.

Output of debug:

What is the result if you burn another iso file using k3b or if you use growisofs command alone?
e.g.: growisofs -Z /dev/dvd=/path/to/file.iso

Comment 2 John Griffiths 2012-01-06 20:13:19 UTC
Just tried in Fedora 16 to copy the Fedora 16 dvd iso. k3b failed again.

Checking checksums of iso and DVD using readraw for the DV produced:

DVD: 0d64ab6b1b800827a9c83d95395b3da0
ISO: 0d64ab6b1b800827a9c83d95395b3da0

So I would say that growisofs worked.

Comment 4 Rex Dieter 2012-01-06 20:43:54 UTC
the same options weren't used. So, perhaps it's one of those causing problems, one or more of:
/dev/sr0=/dev/fd/0 -use-the-force-luke=notray
-use-the-force-luke=tty -use-the-force-luke=4gms
-use-the-force-luke=tracksize:1858582 -use-the-force-luke=dao:1858582
-dvd-compat -speed=18 -use-the-force-luke=bufsize:32m

Comment 5 John Griffiths 2012-01-06 21:17:45 UTC
I changed nothing in k3b. I just used the menu Tools -> Burn Image .

Comment 6 Kevin Kofler 2012-01-06 21:53:54 UTC
We know. There must be something wrong with the default options used by K3b, a bug in either growisofs or K3b.

Comment 7 John Griffiths 2012-02-04 06:20:29 UTC
I am using brasero, but it has issues too; bug 787340

And k3b has been my program of choice for years and I want it back. But I need to burn DVD ISOs. Hope some progress is being made.

Comment 8 Honza Horak 2012-02-14 08:57:19 UTC
John, I know this issue already cost you several media, but if you could try the whole growisofs command (with all options added by k3b, just from the command-line), then we'd know the problem is in growisofs, not in k3b itself:

$ cat your-file.iso | /usr/bin/growisofs -Z /dev/sr0=/dev/fd/0 -use-the-force-luke=notray -use-the-force-luke=tty -use-the-force-luke=4gms -use-the-force-luke=tracksize:1858582 -use-the-force-luke=dao:1858582 -dvd-compat -speed=18 -use-the-force-luke=bufsize:32m

Then by removing the options step by step we could find, which of them make troubles. Since I'm not able to reproduce it, this seems to me like the only way how to move forward.

Comment 9 John Griffiths 2012-02-14 14:11:05 UTC
I will do that. But since today is Valentine's Day, it will have to wait a day or so.

FAILURE!

Apparently it is DAO and it does not like an ISO (other project???) that is greater that the expected 3806375936 size.

My ISO is 4692934656 (4.4G) which is smaller that the DVD capacity of 4.7G.

As a matter of curiosity, why the assumption of 3806375936 bytes?

OK so with 2 good burns and 5 coasters, we have found that a limit set that is too low to start with is causing an arbitrary error when the burn goes above what it calculates to be 100%.

Hope that helps. Leads to the fact that use cases must include the extremes and corner cases.

I probably should have pointed to that. There is an option -use-the-force-luke=tracksize:1858582, which tells growisofs to expect an iso of size 1858582 * 2048 = 3806375936 bytes. This particular command was ment to use for the same iso as in comment #2, i.e. Fedora DVD iso. For other iso images the tracksize should be different, e.g. 4692934656 / 2048 = 2291472 for your 4.4G iso.

Comment 12 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-07 18:14:26 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
