Description of problem: The runtime PulseAudio detection is no longer working with espeak 1.46.01: * I get several ALSA errors and even a JACK error printed to the terminal, then espeak ends up using the PulseAudio ALSA plugin according to pavucontrol. * I also don't see any PulseAudio libraries in the rpm -q --requires espeak output. Maybe some configure switch is needed? Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): espeak-1.46.01-1.fc15.i686 How reproducible: Always. Steps to Reproduce: (a) Run espeak in a terminal and watch the ALSA and JACK errors. or (b) Look at pavucontrol while espeak is running and watch the stream name. or (c) Check rpm -q --requires espeak and notice no PulseAudio libraries linked. Actual results: (a) Errors about ALSA and JACK from PortAudio. (b) The stream is marked "(ALSA plugin)". (c) No libpulse* in the list of (auto-)Requires. Expected results: (a) No errors, PulseAudio is tried first and used. (b) Native PulseAudio stream. (c) At least libpulse.so.0 in the list of (auto-)Requires. Additional info: Several users have reported issues with using espeak with the ALSA PulseAudio plugin in the past, so I think it's important to have native support enabled again.
You have to pass AUDIO=runtime to make explicitly (or patch the makefile to make runtime the default). My original patch made runtime the default, but unfortunately upstream decided to stick with just portaudio as the default.
Kevin, thanks for the original patch and info about this new issue. I got your patch upstream but didn't catch their new defaults.
