Description ST Wong 2012-01-10 04:07:53 UTC
Description of problem:

We've print queue points to a HP printer statically. Recently some print jobs can't be printed with error:

D [09/Jan/2012:10:10:04 +0800] [Job 5189] prnt/backend/hp.c 768: ERROR: cannot open channel PRINT
E [09/Jan/2012:10:10:04 +0800] PID 7439 (/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp) stopped with status 1!

Then the print queue can't print anything although its status is idle:

printer CUSIS_RES is idle. enabled since Mon 09 Jan 2012 10:18:17 AM HKT
CUSIS_RES-5189 pscsprd 59392 Mon 09 Jan 2012 10:06:54 AM HKT

I've to remove the print job and restart cupsd in order to make it accept print jobs again.

There are some error reported in hpcheck (see below). Not sure if it's related.

supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to
successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package
(.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies
installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both
of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

How did you get the hplip-3.10.2 ?
We ship (if I'm not wrong) hplip-1.6.7 and hplip3-3.9.8 with RHEL-5.

We install it based on standard RHEL distribution. Yum list shows following:

Well, this clearly shows that the package's origin is not Red Hat.

This is what I got with Red Hat's hplip3-3.9.8:
Version : 3.9.8 Vendor: Red Hat, Inc.
Signature : DSA/SHA1, Wed 12 Jan 2011 03:40:58 PM CET, Key ID 5326810137017186
Packager : Red Hat, Inc. <http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla>

Comment 4 ST Wong 2012-01-11 17:45:24 UTC
Thanks. Then I should uninstall the one we're using and install hplip3-3.9.8 from Red Hat instead?

The default printer error policy, i.e. what to do when a job fails, is
"stop-printer" i.e. the queue becomes disabled. This will cause subsequent
jobs to queue up until the queue is re-enabled.

You can change this policy using system-config-printer (System ->
Administration -> Printing).

As for why it is that the job is failing: please use the "hp3" backend provided
by the hplip3 package in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and see if that makes any
difference. You may need to uninstall the hplip package you got from HP before installing the Red Hat Enterprise Linux hplip3 package (although the Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions of hplip and hplip3 can be installed side-by-side).

Switch that queue to the hplip3 backend using this command, as root:
lpadmin -p CUSIS_RES -v hp3:/net/HP_LaserJet_P3010_Series?ip=192.168.12.181

Comment 7 ST Wong 2012-01-16 03:00:47 UTC
Thanks.

We don't have hplip installed.
Btw, how to check the current backend being used?

lpadmin -p CUSIS_RES -v hp3:/net/HP_LaserJet_P3010_Series?ip=192.168.12.181

Thanks a lot.

Comment 8 Tim Waugh 2012-01-16 13:29:52 UTC
(In comment #0 you mentioned having hplip-3.10.2-0 installed.)

You can check the current backend being used using 'lpstat -s'. If the URI begins "hp3:" then you are using the backend from the hplip3 package, which is what we'd like to try.

Comment 9 ST Wong 2012-01-19 04:07:27 UTC
Thanks. The URI returned by "lpstat -s" is same when I run "makeuri 192.168.12.181".

I removed the 'unknown' hplip-3 rpm and installed hplip3 from RedHat. Still got some error when running hp3-check. Fyi also. Thx.
