It is python running yumBackend.py that chews up the CPU. top - 03:15:08 up 2 days, 4:14, 6 users, load average: 1.48, 1.42, 1.34 Tasks: 221 total, 2 running, 219 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 94.7%us, 5.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 0.0%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.3%si, 0.0%st Mem: 4122280k total, 3867304k used, 254976k free, 512084k buffers Swap: 12386300k total, 30768k used, 12355532k free, 2013768k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 7889 root 20 0 113m 63m 7992 R 91.1 1.6 1:53.81 yumBackend.py 7603 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 2.0 0.0 0:05.26 kworker/0:1 I wanted to remove all of the PackageKit packages and there are so many dependencies in KDE and other packages that removing PackageKit would remove 193 Packages. Can't do that. I use them. So I looked for a way to disable the demon. Aall the suggestions I found searching the web no longer are applicable or even if the interface is available it does not work to actually stop packagekitd from starting yumBackend.py trying to do updates. I do not want my systems automatically updated anyway. I'll handle it myself.
Any updates? Does anyone know what is going on here? This has started happening again, its quite annoying to have cpu fan ramp up to helicopter speed for five minutes every so often due to packagekit. yum update happens daily for me, nothing is out of date, I have only stock + rpmfusion repos enabled. "rpm -e PackageKit-yum --nodeps" in the meantime.

This message is a reminder that Fedora 16 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 16. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '16'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 16's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 16 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on "Clone This Bug" and open it against that version of Fedora. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
Fedora 16 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-02-12. Fedora 16 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
