Description Richard Shaw 2012-01-12 15:11:30 UTC
Description of problem:
After upgrading my wife's laptop (via preupgrade) it appears all mouse/touchpad settings are ignored (scrolling method, touchpad clicking, etc)

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Login
2. Change settings
3.

Actual results:
Settings are not respected.

Expected results:
Settings are respected.

Additional info:
I'm not sure if it matters but due to an On Snap! issue I have already moved ~/.gnome2 so it could be recreated.

Comment 1 Owen Taylor 2012-01-12 18:37:45 UTC
Reassigning to the correct component

Comment 2 Richard Shaw 2012-01-13 14:29:07 UTC
I'm not sure what update fixed it but side scrolling and touchpad clicking are now working as expected.

Comment 3 Richard Shaw 2012-01-14 13:56:54 UTC
The problem seems to be that gnome-settings-daemon was not starting (or failing to start). It happened again so this time I moved ~/.local to a backup and on re-login settings are working again.

Comment 4 Richard Shaw 2012-01-21 12:48:50 UTC
It appears the problem was caused by gnome-settings-daemon either crashing or not starting. There was no error message that there was anything wrong, and no log text that jumped out at me in /var/log/gdm/:0-greeter.log which is the only place I found a reference to gnome-settings-daemon.

I also grepped through both the current ~/.local and the backup I made that was causing the failure and I don't see anything obvious that would prevent gnome-settings-daemon from starting.

Comment 5 Richard Shaw 2012-02-27 14:47:34 UTC
Unless someone has any interest and pursuing why gnome-settings-daemon was failing to start (or why there was no useful logging data) I'm going to close this bug rather than wait for EOL.

seeing gnome-settings-deamon in process list but still cant change movement speed/acceleration of touchpad cursor.

related or just a missing key?

will try moving the .local

Comment 7 collura 2012-03-09 21:22:48 UTC
moving .local didnt seem to effect it but moving the .gnome2 and .gnome2_private seemed to help. thanks.

Comment 8 Fedora End Of Life 2013-01-16 12:11:21 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 16 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 16. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '16'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 16's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 16 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" and open it against that version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 9 Brian Kolczynski 2013-01-27 05:42:03 UTC
Reporting similar issues on F18 here, when I change the speed setting of the mouse, the mouse does not actually go faster, and the setting is reverted to its former state when I leave and come back to the screen.

Comment 10 Fedora End Of Life 2013-02-13 12:21:41 UTC
Fedora 16 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-02-12. Fedora 16 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
