Description Len DiMaggio 2008-10-16 16:13:30 UTC
Affects: Documentation (Ref Guide, User Guide, etc.)
Complexity: Medium

project_key: SOA

This is something that we need to document as it may cause user confusion.

The values displayed in the enterprise console UI for message count trend upward over time, irregardless of the data collection interval.

For example, at 12:00 the user starts the JON server+agent, deploys an ESB archive and before 13:00 sends 1000 messages through the a service deployed in the ESB archive.

If the user later specifies a data "Metric Collection Schedule" of from 14:00 to 15:00, this being a time period when no messages are being processed by the service, the message count metric displayed will still be 1000.

The only way that the user can get the message counter to display a zero value is to reset the counter.

We need to fix this in the CP release.

Comment 3 Dana Mison 2008-10-22 07:07:07 UTC
I'm struggling to describe this in a translatable manner.

Basically it doesn't show you how many messages occured in that period, instead it 'zooms' in for the period you specify. Correct ?

Comment 4 nwallace 2008-10-29 11:04:09 UTC
Mark's asked me to assign this to Tom Cunningham for help.

Comment 5 tcunning 2008-10-30 05:16:01 UTC
Suggested the following text to Darrin:

"The JON plugin shows message count (avg) numbers for the ESB server, deployment, services, and actions. There is an issue in this release where these numbers are actually the total number of messages rather than a rolling average. This is an issue that will be fixed in the next release."

Comment 9 Dana Mison 2009-01-29 03:03:53 UTC
Added to JON known issues in release notes:

The Message Count Average values for ESB server, deployment, services and actions are incorrectly displaying totals instead of averages.

Comment 11 Len DiMaggio 2009-02-26 01:34:07 UTC
Assigning to QE to verify that the change is (also) in the 4.3 CP01 docs.

Comment 12 Len DiMaggio 2009-03-05 20:08:24 UTC
Changed fixed-in version to CP02 - fix will be verified when a new version of JON is available.

Comment 13 Len DiMaggio 2009-09-09 14:37:22 UTC
Reopening this JIRA - still seeing this with 4.3 CP02 CR3 and JON 2.3

Comment 14 Len DiMaggio 2009-12-08 17:24:39 UTC
We will also have to list this as a known issue for 5.0

Comment 15 nwallace 2010-01-08 19:05:54 UTC
Checking with Darrin on how he's documenting this.

Comment 16 David Le Sage 2010-02-09 06:56:34 UTC
Hello Neil,

I've documented this one for the 5.0 Release Notes. The draft version of the text states:

https://jira.jboss.org/jira/browse/SOA-949

The JON plug-in's "Message Count" feature is incorrectly displaying a total number of messages
for the ESB server, deployment, services and actions. It should actually be showing a rolling
    average.

Comment 18 nwallace 2010-02-10 13:37:40 UTC
This is resolved for 5 now so I've cloned out the 'affects 4.3' to SOA-1943

Comment 20 Len DiMaggio 2010-04-01 17:48:46 UTC
The issue here is not that we need this 'trending up' of data documented as an unresolved bug. Rather, the function is operating as expected, but in a non-intuitive way. We should (1) remove this JIRA from the list of resolved issues in the release notes document and (2) add its description to the JON Monitoring chapter in the Admin Guide.
